Bongmyeong-dong kimchi stew lunch with a baby: Jeonju House
In short
Jeonju House is a Korean home-style restaurant in Bongmyeong-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, where the kimchi stews are made with kimchi and aged kimchi fermented on site. At a lunch visit with dad and a baby, the writer ordered the aged kimchi galbi kimchi stew for two plus a giant egg roll with stone-pot rice, and noticed the row of onggi jars beside the entrance and the roomy first floor and second-floor reservation seating. With a sharp, tangy aged kimchi broth next to a soft egg roll, Jeonju House is an easy pick for a family meal out.

What kind of restaurant is Jeonju House?
Jeonju House is a Korean restaurant in Bongmyeong-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, serving kimchi stew and pork belly. I was craving a hot, tangy kimchi stew, so I headed over to 'Jeonju House' in Bongmyeong-dong 😊

The name itself has a cozy feel, and it turns out the place is known for using homemade kimchi and aged kimchi! Let me introduce Jeonju House in Bongmyeong-dong, Daejeon.
Jeonju House hours and where to park in Bongmyeong-dong

Jeonju House is open daily from 9:00 to 22:20, with last order at 21:20. It's located near Gyeryong Spatel, and you can park in the alley behind Jeonjujip or around Gyeryong Spatel.

The onggi jars outside and the 1st and 2nd-floor seating
When I got to Jeonju House, the first thing that caught my eye was the row of clay pots (jangdokdae) beside the store >< Seeing rows of clay pots like this at a barbecue or kimchi stew place made me think they really use proper aged kimchi here — I got all excited and full of expectations 🫶🏻

Once inside, it was much — much — bigger than I expected! The atmosphere felt comfortable, so even visiting with dad and my baby, it was easy and nice 👶🏻

Jeonju House especially has plenty of seating, and besides the first floor there's a second floor available for reservations, so it'd be great for family gatherings, group meetups, or company dinners too.

Aged kimchi galbi kimchi stew for two at lunch
I visited during lunchtime, so today I ordered the aged kimchi galbi kimchi stew for two plus the giant egg roll. 📝 I heard the cast-iron lid grilled Hanwoo pork belly is the signature dish, so next time I'll have to come back for dinner and grill some pork belly too!

After a short wait, the kimchi stew arrived. It came with generous portions and big chunks of aged kimchi and galbi (short rib), so it definitely felt different from a regular kimchi stew.
Let's start simmering it!

As it simmered a bit longer, the aged kimchi got softer and the broth developed more flavor. Tasting it, it was tangy with that deep aged-kimchi character that went so well with rice 👏🏻👏🏻

The galbi was cut in big chunks too, so it was fun picking the meat off the bone! A spoonful of kimchi stew broth, a spoonful of rice, then tearing off some aged kimchi to eat with the meat — this combination is a real rice thief 😳🩷

Giant egg roll with stone-pot rice
And then, the giant egg roll I'd been looking forward to! True to its name, it came out really — huge. Truly giant!
Since the kimchi stew was on the spicy side, eating a bit of egg roll in between mellowed the flavor out nicely — the combo worked really well.

Eating the kimchi stew with a slice of egg roll on top of rice, my chopsticks just kept going back for more 🥹

The basic side dishes that came along were all tasty too, and having it with pot rice made the meal even more filling.
Aged kimchi galbi kimchi stew + egg roll + pot rice — need I say more, it's a perfect 100-point combo 🤎
