Hwanggeum-dong Daegu Korean restaurant: tabletop cheonggukjang stew

In short

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is a fire-grilled Korean restaurant on Beomeocheon-ro in Hwanggeum-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu, and the only branch of the original Banwoldang restaurant. The meal was two servings of stone-plate buja seokgalbi (marinated grilled short ribs) with an extra bibimbap, and while the main branch serves its cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) in a stone pot, the Suseong branch boils it fresh on a tabletop burner. A ssam vegetable self-bar and a 1-hour public parking voucher make Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch a filling lunch stop.

Hi everyone, it's Soseomom :) Not long ago, while passing through Hwanggeum-dong in Suseong-gu around lunchtime, I stumbled onto a great restaurant and decided to check it out!

I'd visited the original branch once before and had such a satisfying meal there, and I heard the only branch in all of Daegu was located right here in Hwanggeum-dong~ So to relive that satisfying meal, I paid a visit to the branch! This is Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch, located in Hwanggeum-dong, Suseong-gu :)

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch, a Korean restaurant near Beomeo-dong, is a fire-grilled cooking specialist located on Beomeocheon-ro in Hwanggeum-dong :) The original Banwoldang location is hugely famous for its fire-grilled squid stir-fry, fire-grilled pork stir-fry, and seokgalbi (grilled marinated ribs), and it turns out there's a branch here in Suseong-gu! Apparently it's the only branch in all of Daegu~ For parking, submitting your receipt after the meal got me a 1-hour voucher for the Beomeocheon-ro public street parking lot~

The interior was decorated cleanly overall! And the staff were incredibly kind too!

Tablet ordering screen installed at the table

Ordering by tablet at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang: what we chose

Every table has a tablet installed for ordering, so it was easy and convenient~ From the stone-plate buja seokgalbi to fire-grilled squid stir-fry and fire-grilled pork stir-fry, they were all popular menu items, but since I had thoroughly enjoyed the buja seokgalbi at the original branch, I ordered it again!

Table set with basic side dishes after ordering

After ordering, they neatly set the table with the basic side dishes first~

Side dishes including seaweed stem and seasoned bean sprouts
Plate of spicy radish salad and fried burdock side dish

The side dishes they served included seaweed stem, seasoned bean sprouts, spicy radish salad, and fried burdock in soy glaze — all neat, well-made Korean side dishes, perfect for the meal~

Stone pot at the main branch, tabletop burner cheonggukjang in Suseong

And what a nice touch — cheonggukjang doenjang stew comes included as a basic side dish when you order a main! I remember really enjoying this cheonggukjang stew at the original branch too~ That distinctive earthy, savory flavor was genuinely top-notch! Unlike the original branch, where the doenjang stew is boiled and served in a stone pot, at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch — a Korean restaurant in Hwanggeum-dong — they serve it so you boil it fresh right at the table on a burner!

And besides the basic side dishes and cheonggukjang doenjang stew, there's a separate self-bar for the ssam vegetables to go with the main dish, so it was very convenient to use!

Stone-plate buja seokgalbi for two on the table

Stone-plate buja seokgalbi for two: portion size and taste

Ta-da ♡ My order of stone-plate buja seokgalbi for two arrived!!! The seokgalbi grilled on the stone plate passed the visual test right away!!! For a serving meant for two, it was seriously generous~

Underneath the seokgalbi was a hearty bed of onions and enoki mushrooms, and it was topped with a heaping pile of fresh shredded scallions to go with it :)

Stone-plate seokgalbi piled high with shredded scallions

The seokgalbi grilled on the stone plate felt like marinated pork ribs, and the seasoning was every bit as well-balanced and umami-packed as what I enjoyed at the original branch! The meat was tender too, and it was the perfect dish to enjoy with rice!

A piece of seokgalbi with enoki mushrooms and onions

It also paired nicely with the enoki mushrooms and onions served alongside the seokgalbi, but personally, I found the combination with the shredded scallions the most satisfying of all!

A ssam wrap with seokgalbi and shredded scallions

Wrapping a piece of seokgalbi and vegetables together in the ssam vegetables I grabbed from the self-bar made for a truly satisfying bite!!! Such a satisfying way to enjoy a hearty meal!

Adding bibimbap instead of a bowl of plain rice

At Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch, a Korean restaurant near Beomeo-dong, plain rice isn't included when you order a main, so I had to order rice separately~ Since I wanted bibimbap (mixed rice bowl), which pairs so well with seokgalbi, I ordered the bibimbap available as an add-on menu item~

A bowl of the added bibimbap order
Gochujang chili paste added onto the bibimbap

I drizzled on the gochujang (chili paste) that comes with the bibimbap order, added a touch of the earthy cheonggukjang doenjang stew, and mixed it all up!!! The bibimbap had as many varied ingredients as its looks promised, and it was so delicious :)

A piece of seokgalbi placed on top of the mixed bibimbap

Topping this special spicy-gochujang bibimbap with a piece of seokgalbi made for the most perfectly hearty bite imaginable!!! With this neat, thoughtfully made menu, I got to feel the same satisfaction here at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch, a Korean restaurant in Hwanggeum-dong, that I felt at the original branch :)
