I don't know how many times I said I was so glad we came here.

Today's spot: Haenyeo Sotbap, a Korean restaurant near Suseong Lake, Daegu, that's known for its sotbap (hot pot rice).

After a Suseong Lake walk and the picture-book library, this was our final pick
We took our child for a lap around Suseong Lake, then visited the Suseong Lake Picture Book Library where my husband and kid looked at books while I mulled over restaurant options — and landed on Haenyeo Sotbap, a well-known Korean restaurant near Suseong Lake, Daegu.

Why the hall and private rooms were packed even at 1pm on a weekday
It was past 1pm on a weekday, so I figured there'd be plenty of seats. Nope — both the big central hall and the deeper inner hall were completely full.
There were also a lot of private rooms called 'Yunseul,' every single one occupied. No wonder it's called a top Korean restaurant near Suseong Lake.

Even with every room full, the atmosphere still felt pretty relaxed — probably thanks to the high ceilings, wide gaps between tables, and long benches. A comfortable space, and I liked that.
Why we chose two à la carte dishes instead of a set
I thought about ordering a set menu, but we went with the Wando abalone sotbap and the new Unyang-style bulgogi sotbap instead. Since we'd be getting butter-grilled abalone from the review event anyway, there wasn't much reason to order a set.

A 13-dish spread served in traditional brass ware
The side dishes at Haenyeo Sotbap arrived — served in bangjja yugi (traditional hammered brassware), giving the whole table an upscale feel.

The hot dishes followed. A 13-dish spread — this alone could make a full meal. We were told the hot dishes can't be refilled, but the dishes served first can be.

The grilled Spanish mackerel came with the bones already removed, so it was easy to eat, and it was really savory with delicious seasoning. The fried eggplant was perfect as a light palate cleanser before the rice — the kind of flavor that naturally makes you go 'mmm.'

The review-event butter-grilled abalone went straight to my kid
Two pieces of butter-grilled abalone from the Naver receipt review event. I cut it up with scissors for my child, who ate it nonstop. I didn't get a single bite myself, but it was nice seeing her eat so well.

Wando abalone sotbap, ₩23,000
The abalone sotbap at Haenyeo Sotbap, ₩23,000. Two big pieces of abalone sat on top, with savory, slightly salty abalone innards mixed in underneath.

We scooped the rice into a bigger bowl, then poured the hot water that came with it into the pot and covered it.

One spoonful of the mixed rice and I got it — I understood why this place is so busy. The abalone was tender and mild, blending beautifully with the toasty aroma of the sotbap. Not a flashy flavor, but the umami was full and genuinely delicious. Wrapping it with the seaweed that came alongside was great too.

My seafood-averse husband's pick: Unyang-style bulgogi sotbap, ₩20,000
The Unyang-style bulgogi sotbap at Haenyeo Sotbap, ₩20,000. My husband isn't great with seafood, so he ordered this meat version instead.

After one bite, he said it was so good and insisted I try some too. How do I even describe it — the flavor and aroma just tasted... good, plainly good. He said it was the best beef bulgogi he's ever had.
We even neatly finished the sungnyung (scorched rice tea) made by pouring hot water into the sotbap. Seeing myself gravitate toward foods that don't sit heavy in the stomach, I guess I've gotten a bit older. I'm increasingly drawn to this kind of food — the kind that's easy on the body.

You can also grab coffee and a slushie on your way out. A comfortable interior, clean and delicious food, and friendly service too — a genuinely good meal near Suseong Lake, Daegu.

Parking and hours
Parking is available in the basement lot of the building; if it's full, staff will direct you. Maximum 1.5 hours. The parking attendants were very kind. Hours are 11:30–21:00, with a break time of 15:30–17:00. Closed on Chuseok day, with no regular closed day otherwise.

Good for families with kids, or a parents' gathering
Haenyeo Sotbap had plenty of private rooms and quite a few older guests. Both the menu and the space seemed genuinely well-suited to a parent's birthday or a family gathering with kids. If you're looking for a private dining room in Daegu, this one's worth considering.
Baby chairs are available for families, and if you take part in the Naver receipt review event like we did, you can get 2 pieces of butter-grilled abalone — definitely worth doing.
