In short

Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui Goseong Branch is a retro charcoal-grill pork restaurant in Goseong-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. The 600g pork platter serves samgyeopsal (pork belly), pork neck, pressed five-layer pork, jowl meat and pork skirt meat all at once, and with a baby chair and marshmallow skewers on hand it made for an easy family outing with kids. I'd heard there was a place that grills meat over charcoal briquettes, so I went to check out Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui Goseong Branch :) I already love going out for meat, but meat grilled over charcoal has that special something extra ☺️☺️ What I liked especially is that here you don't just get one cut of pork — there's a menu that lets you try several cuts at once, so I thought it'd also be a good pick for anyone hunting for a good-value Goseong-dong samgyeopsal spot.

Charcoal briquettes stacked in front of the restaurant

True to being a charcoal-grill specialist, there were charcoal briquettes stacked out front, which gave off such a warm, nostalgic feeling 🤎🤎 Above the sign, the menu and prices were written in big letters, so you could get a sense of what's on offer before even stepping inside. There are lots of sleek, modern meat restaurants these days, but honestly this kind of retro, homey atmosphere was a welcome change 🫢🫢

The interior kept the same retro vibe as the outside. Round tables and square tables sit together, and the whole space feels comfortable for grilling meat. The charcoal atmosphere in particular — chef's kiss 🔥🔥

Is it okay to bring kids? The self-serve bar and baby chair

There's a self-serve bar and a baby chair on hand, so visiting as a family with kids, like we did, felt much less stressful ☺️☺️ In the evening it's also a great atmosphere for meat with a drink, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a bar near Bukgucheong Station (people having office dinners here, haha).

Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui had a wide range beyond just pork — beef and fresh seafood too 👍👍 When we visited it happened to be prawn season, so prawns were on the menu too 🦐 With everything from meat to seafood to choose from, and prices generally on the affordable side, it's a solid pick if you're after a good-value meat restaurant.

Foil-wrapped bean sprouts and kimchi, marshmallow skewers for kids

A little while after we ordered, the side dishes started arriving one by one. Here's something I liked ✔️ The bean sprouts and kimchi don't just come as plain side dishes — they arrive wrapped in foil so you can grill them right on the pan. That way you can eat them without them burning, which was nice. And second ✔️✔️ There are marshmallow skewers on hand that kids will love! My kid was already eyeing them before the meat even arrived, so I told her she'd get one for dessert if she ate well — and she cleaned her plate in no time, haha. The best 👍👍

Raw 600g pork platter with different cuts arranged

The 600g pork platter — which cuts do you get?

Order one pork platter and you get to try several cuts of pork at once — pork belly, pork neck, pressed five-layer pork, jowl meat, pork skirt meat, and more 👍👍 Rather than eating just one cut the whole time, comparing texture and flavor across cuts made it more fun, and I really loved this kind of setup.

Pork browning nicely over charcoal

What's different about grilling over charcoal?

And now the biggest reason for today's visit — the charcoal grilling 🔥🔥 Cooking the meat over charcoal briquettes definitely felt different from a regular grill plate. Kind of like grilling barbecue outdoors? The subtle smokiness unique to charcoal soaked into the meat, browning the outside while keeping the inside juicy, so the meat's own flavor came through even richer.

Meat with that savory juiciness and smoky char paired well with mu-saengchae (spicy radish salad) or grilled kimchi.

Finishing with doenjang jjigae and seafood ramen

After eating our fill of meat, if you're Korean you can't skip the doenjang jjigae, haha. We wrapped up warmly with the doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) that's a must alongside meat, and finished it all off with seafood ramen 🤍🤍

A generous pork platter properly infused with charcoal smoke! A great-value meat restaurant with the fun of picking through different cuts ✔️✔️
