Post-workout Korean BBQ with a friend in Yeonsinnae: Sambaek Hanu

In short

Sambaek Hanu Daecheop is an aged-beef short rib restaurant right by Yeonsinnae Station in Eunpyeong, Seoul. After a workout, the writer and a same-age neighborhood friend shared a 300g set of aged beef short rib (₩33,000), 200g of garlic short rib (₩19,800), plus complimentary doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and hanwoo chadolbaegi ramyeon, with the garlicky soy-marinated ribs standing out for their juiciness and umami. At under ₩10,000 per 100g, it's worth a repeat visit for anyone hunting for good-value Korean beef short rib.

I always used to say I was too busy to see my same-age neighborhood friend, but lately we've been working out together so we see each other a lot more. What goes with working out? Protein. And if you forget about the price, what's the best protein? Beef ♥︎ Today's spot is an aged beef short rib specialist, Sambaek Hanu Daecheop.

The table setup: grill, scissors, tongs, and a plate to set the meat on.

Side dishes and a price change on the set

The basic sides were scallion salad, scallion kimchi, cubed radish kimchi, pickled onion, white kimchi, hot pepper and garlic, wasabi, and ssamjang. Clean and tidy — the sides overall had that salty-yet-deep flavor that feels like it was made by someone experienced.

The set used to come with complimentary yukhoe (raw beef tartare), but since a lot of people don't eat it, they dropped it from the menu this month and lowered the price — the set went from ₩39,000 down to ₩33,000. Good to know!

Plate of marbled 300g aged beef short rib

How does the 300g aged beef short rib taste?

A generously portioned plate of meat. This is the 300g aged short rib, with marbling visible between the red lean meat — it looked tender even before cooking, an instant pass from me.

Short rib browning nicely on the grill

A savory smell spread as it hit the grill. The short rib browning up nicely... since it's beef, we didn't overcook it, just grilled it to the right point, and the juiciness and tender texture were insane ♥︎

Plate of salt, wasabi, and ssamjang dipping sauces

Maybe because it's aged, the beef aroma was seriously intense. This one isn't marinated, so it's best dipped lightly in salt or a bit of wasabi and ssamjang. (The garlic soy sauce on the right is for the garlic-marinated short rib.)

The complimentary doenjang jjigae that came mid-meal

The complimentary doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) that arrived partway through. Bite-sized tofu, enoki mushrooms, onion, and zucchini. There was even a handful of leftover meat scraps in it that were unmistakably beef ♥︎

200g garlic beef short rib — this is the real deal

The extra order of garlic beef short rib, 200g, ₩19,800. Real garlic soy marinade... no Korean can resist this. If the plain short rib was already delicious, imagine how good this one is.

Since it's marinated, they line the grill with paper foil unlike the plain short rib. The meat is soaked through with garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil aroma, and the slightly charred marinade doubles the flavor, doesn't it?

Garlic-marinated short rib grilling on paper foil

Personally, I found this garlic soy marinated version even more delicious than the plain one. The juiciness you can clearly see in the photos, plus the umami of garlic soy sauce and the nuttiness of sesame oil — honestly it felt like I could eat it forever.

Finishing off with hanwoo chadolbaegi ramyeon

The grand finale: hanwoo chadolbaegi ramyeon. It's Shin Ramyun with six pieces of beef brisket in it. A mild, well-balanced broth with scallions and other vegetable scraps thrown in — meat, rice, a spoonful of broth, and that's it, done.

Final spread of meat, rice, and ramyeon broth

With beef at under ₩10,000 per 100g, how cheap is that? The portion is pretty solid too, and the taste is insane, so why wouldn't you eat here. I'll definitely be back if I'm looking for good-value Korean beef short rib.
