Hyehwa restaurant for spicy pollock roe oil pasta: Omil

In short

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno is a Western-style restaurant in Jongno, Seoul. Before a theater performance, I ordered spicy pollock roe oil pasta, Rubber Duck Omurice, and soba maki in its cozy dining room. Omil makes for a cheerful, satisfying meal in Daehangno.

Before seeing a fun play in Daehangno, I was absolutely starving, you know?? They say even Geumgangsan Mountain is best appreciated after a meal, so before our theater date, we headed to Omil Hyehwa Daehangno, a much-talked-about pasta spot in Hyehwa.

Visiting Omil in Hyehwa

From the moment I stepped inside, I really loved the warm, atmospheric interior.

The overall mood was cozy and neat, making it a lovely choice for a couple’s date or a blind date. There were also plenty of cute touches that children would enjoy, so it felt like an ideal place to visit with family and kids, too.

Once we were seated, we put together a hearty order of the restaurant’s signature and popular dishes: Chong Chong Chong! Rubber Duck Omurice, spicy pollock roe oil pasta, and soba maki. I was so excited:)

Chong Chong Chong! Rubber Duck Omurice

The first dish out was Chong Chong Chong! Rubber Duck Omurice—cute right from the name. The second it landed on the table, it was so adorable that I simply had to take photos. It really felt like a signature dish unique to Omil...

Cute presentation of Rubber Duck Omurice

Its presentation was so perfect it made me gasp. Tiny quail-egg rubber ducks were perched all over the fluffy, softly wrapped tornado egg omurice, as if they were bobbing along on top. So, so cute!

It was not all about looks, either—the flavor balance was excellent! Inside the tender egg was a generous portion of nutty, fluffy fried rice, paired beautifully with a rich yet clean demiglace-style sauce.

The little rubber-duck float prop thoughtfully placed beside the omurice made taking photos extra fun. I imagine this signature dish would get especially big cheers at tables with children:)

What does the spicy pollock roe oil pasta taste like?

Next came the spicy pollock roe oil pasta, a dish that really showed off the deep flavor you expect from a pasta specialist. The nutty, salty pollock roe base had a gentle, clean heat, which cut through the richness oil pasta can sometimes have. It was moreish with every bite—the kind of flavor Koreans simply cannot help but love.

There was an abundance of popping pollock roe, so the texture alongside the noodles never got boring. The spicy, salty sauce coated every strand well, and I enjoyed it deliciously without tiring of it until the final bite. For reference, you can choose less spicy or spicier!

If you are looking for polished, dependable pasta for a Daehangno date or blind-date meal, this is a dish I would absolutely recommend.

Soba maki with sweet, nutty, clean flavors

We ordered the soba maki as a side dish. It is a roll of buckwheat noodles cooked in Omil’s special sauce, fresh crunchy vegetables, and soft Japanese-style rolled egg, wrapped like gimbap (seaweed rice roll).

The cute face drawn on the rolled egg at the end of the maki made me smile before I even ate it. Then, in one full bite: the pleasant sweetness of egg and the clean flavor of buckwheat noodles!!

The crunchy vegetables tied it all together beautifully. The portion was generous, too, and more than enough for two people to enjoy a substantial lunch:)

A Hyehwa meal that pleased both the eyes and palate

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno was more than simply a place to eat—it was a complete Hyehwa dining spot with both looks and flavor. From the moment the dishes arrived through the end of the meal, both my eyes and palate were happy, and I had such a satisfying time~

An Omil meal enjoyed for both presentation and flavor

I highly recommend Omil in Hyehwa to anyone looking for an atmospheric meal before or after a Daehangno play, considering a date or blind-date spot with their partner, or hoping for a pleasant meal out with children.
