Thinking about it, when you live with someone, eating out can actually be more economical than buying ingredients, cooking at home, and doing the dishes — so lately I've been eating out a lot more. After a while I stopped by a Seongsu pho spot, Thanon55.

Where is Thanon55 in Seongsu?

Today's star, Seongsu pho spot Thanon55, isn't in the hot main alleys but sits a bit off to the side. It's actually run by Thai locals, so both the taste and the vibe feel genuinely Thai.

The inside doesn't have a ton of tables, but there's plenty of room for couples stopping by for a Seongsu date. At a glance it kind of reminds me of a restaurant in Chiang Mai, a city I love — this Seongsu Thanon55.

You order via tablet, which feels a bit un-Thai, haha — but modern conveniences are nice too. Today's picks were Thanon55's signature fried tripe curry pho and pork stir-fry rice noodles. Besides those, they had plenty of the classic Thai dishes you'd expect.

Basically the food is brought to you, but if you need extra side dishes, you grab them yourself from the self-serve bar. Not quite refrigerated, but everything had proper lids, keeping things reasonably hygienic.

It's not exactly an open kitchen, but even though the sign said to pick up the food yourself, the Thai staff kindly brought it straight to our table anyway — extra points for that. There weren't many customers, but it had that kind of cult-favorite, hidden-gem feeling. Thanon55 seems to be a franchise with locations elsewhere too, so I'd need to visit the other branches to make a fair judgment.

How do the tripe curry noodles and stir-fried pork noodles taste?

First up, the fried tripe curry pho. Just looking at the fried tripe, there's no way this could taste bad, haha. It's beef fat fried again, so my arteries might not thank me, but the idea is genuinely great.

Next came the pork stir-fry noodles. Maybe because it was plated on an authentically Thai-style dish, it gave off an even stronger local feel. Thai food really is delicious...

With both dishes ready, it was finally time to dig in. Personally, maybe because it's pricier, or maybe because the curry tripe pho is Thanon55's signature dish, I'd give my vote to the fried tripe over the pork stir-fry.

I started with the visually overwhelming fried tripe curry pho first. Breaking down the tripe and sharing it nicely with my friend, the portion was more substantial than it looked, so the price — which seemed steep at first glance — felt justified. As for the pork stir-fry rice noodles, maybe they pre-stir-fry the pork ahead of peak hours, because the texture had an unusual mix of crispy, crunchy, and chewy — a bit unfamiliar, but I trusted the locals' skills and went with it.

Who should eat at Thanon55 in Seongsu?

With the meal wrapped up, I'll end this review of Seongsu pho spot Thanon55 here, looking forward to trying other Thai dishes next time. Seongsu already has plenty of famous, delicious, great-value pho spots like Kkua and Eunjun, but if you're looking to try something new instead of the familiar, or want to feel that local Thai vibe right in Seongsu, Thanon55's Seongsu branch is worth a visit.
