Chang beer and mu thod curry lunch at Thanon55, a Seongsu Thai spot

Today I want to introduce Thanon55, a place I visited when I was craving Thai food in Seongsu :) I love Thai food to begin with, so I went looking for a good Thai spot in Seongsu and ended up here. The menu had plenty of variety and the prices were better than I expected, so it made for a great lunch! The set menus in particular felt like good value for what you got, and the portions overall were generous.

Thanon55 Seongsu opening hours and where to park

Thanon55 Seongsu Main Branch is on the 2nd floor of 16 Ttukseom-ro 9-gil, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, open 11:30–22:00 with a break time from 15:00–17:00. Closed on Sundays.

It's tucked inside an alley, so look for that yellow sign — it makes it much easier to find.

Follow the sign up to the second floor and you'll find this sign with the Thai flag on it!

Inside Thanon55: the dining room and the self-serve bar

The interior at Thanon55 is decorated to really feel like Thailand, so the moment I walked in it felt like I was traveling abroad. The big windows made it bright and cheerful too!

The self-serve bar has small plates in different styles, all of them so cute that it was easy to just grab whichever you liked. There were also side dishes like danmuji (pickled radish) and mu-saengchae (spicy radish salad) — this radish dish was surprisingly delicious. Even though it's Thai food, it suited Korean tastes really well, so it was great to eat alongside the main dishes throughout the meal.

On the table there were Thai-style pickled chilies, chili powder, chili sauce, and other condiments to add to your food.

And best of all, they had Chang beer! It was the beer I loved during a recent trip to Thailand, so I was thrilled to see it and ordered it right away haha.

Gamjatang rice noodle soup and shrimp fried rice set at Thanon55

Thanon55 has quite a wide variety of dishes, and the prices were better than I expected. The set menus in particular looked like good value, so I ordered the gamjatang rice noodle soup + shrimp fried rice set along with a small mu thod curry. The gamjatang rice noodle soup comes with two big chunks of pork spine bone on top.

The name might make you think of gamjatang (Korean spicy pork bone stew), but in reality it felt more like a spicy Thai rice noodle soup with the bones and meat from gamjatang added in.

The meat came off the bone easily and tasted great, and the broth was clean and delicious too.

There was plenty of noodles too, so having it as part of the set made for a really filling lunch. Dip it in the soy sauce they give you and it's a perfect match for Korean tastes 😀

The shrimp fried rice was meant to be a side, but the portion was almost as big as a full dish on its own. There was plenty of shrimp, and the soft-boiled fried egg on top went so well with it! Even ordering just the set alone would probably be quite filling.

Mu thod curry (S): better than the one I ate in Bangkok

And now for the best dish I had that day!! I don't usually go out of my way to order curry, but it looked so good on the menu that I decided to try it. And it was seriously delicious. The meat is fried pork jowl, and you could really taste that crunchy-yet-chewy texture pork jowl has — and even though it's fried, it wasn't greasy at all. There was a generous pile of garlic flakes on top too, which paired perfectly with the pork jowl.

The curry has soft, fluffy egg mixed in, and the way the egg soaked up the curry was also amazing.

Eat the rice, curry, fried pork jowl, and chili sauce together in one bite and the combination is genuinely insane. I've had mu thod curry at a restaurant in Bangkok before, and honestly, this was better than that. If you come here, you have to try the mu thod curry at least once!

Finishing lunch with a canned Thai drink

From the interior that really feels like Thailand to the Thai beer and the wide range of dishes, Thanon55 let me properly enjoy Thai food.

On top of everything, the owner was so kind, and since the food is made by Thai staff themselves, it really tasted authentic. For dessert I had a canned Thai drink!! It tasted exactly like the milk tea I bought in Thailand, and it was the perfect way to end the meal 👍

The mu thod curry I had that day was especially delicious, so I think I'll be coming all the way out to Seongsu again for Thai food. If you love Thai food, definitely give Thanon55 a try :)
