Jongno 5-ga dak hanmari dinner with parents: Sunhuine Bindaetteok

We decided to have dinner together in Dongdaemun with my parents, and after mulling over what to eat, I ended up going out for dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) again after a while.

There are so many good restaurants around Dongdaemun, but that day I was craving something with warm broth and plenty of chicken, so we headed to Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun.

We visited with my parents, and once inside, the interior turned out to be much bigger than I expected.

The tables weren't crammed together — there was decent space between them, which made it easy to talk while eating. When I visited, quite a few tables were families or larger groups, so I think this place would work well for anyone looking for a group dining spot in Dongdaemun Market.

When eating with my parents especially, I care about the food but also prefer a place where we can sit comfortably and talk rather than somewhere cramped or noisy — and this place scored well on that front.

What we ordered: dak hanmari, rice cake and noodles

The moment the dak hanmari arrived, my first thought was: what a generous portion. A whole chicken sat in a big basin, surrounded by an array of vegetables, rice cake, jujube, and even ginseng. It wasn't just chicken sitting there alone — the variety of ingredients made it look hearty from the very first glance!

With jujube and ginseng in there too, my parents and I joked, "isn't this basically a tonic?" haha. The broth wasn't the intensely strong style — it had a clean, natural flavor that came from the chicken and vegetables simmering together.

It tasted fairly light at first, but as we kept it simmering and eating, the chicken and vegetable flavors kept building into the broth, and it felt like it got deeper and deeper.

So I felt this would suit a Dongdaemun dak hanmari lunch or dinner menu well. When you're walking around Dongdaemun Market and want a hot, hearty Korean meal for lunch or dinner, it fills you up and gives you plenty of chicken too — nothing lacking for a full meal.

The chicken, cooked thoroughly in the broth, was moist and tender, and eating it with the warm broth made it feel light enough that my parents enjoyed it without any heaviness. We also dipped the chicken in the sauce — it tasted noticeably different from eating it with just the broth, so we kept switching between the two. The side dishes were also neatly presented and paired well with the dak hanmari.

Once the rice cake simmered long enough in the dak hanmari broth, it soaked up the flavor and turned soft and chewy — really delicious. Between a bite of chicken, a bite of rice cake, and some vegetables, our chopsticks stayed busy.

On top of that, we finally added the noodle add-on.

After we'd eaten a good amount of the chicken and vegetables, adding the noodles made the broth feel even richer than before. Slurping down noodles in the warm broth made for a satisfying way to end the meal. Personally, I think dak hanmari is a dish you can enjoy in even more ways when you visit with a group.
