Dongdaemun chicken hot pot lunch with knife-cut noodles: Sunhuine
In short
Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun is a two-floor dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) and bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) restaurant in the Dongdaemun dak hanmari alley, between Jongno 5-ga and Dongdaemun stations in Jongno, Seoul. Three of us ordered one dak hanmari with a knife-cut noodle add-on, a meat mung bean bindaetteok and Bambambam makgeolli, dipping the chicken in the restaurant's own sauce mix. The light chicken broth and the nutty meat pancake paired far better than expected.

We were meeting up around Dongdaemun and trying to figure out what to eat when the idea of warm broth with bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) popped into my head — so here's the Dongdaemun spot we went with.
Where is Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun, and what are its hours?
Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun is 351m from Exit 5 of Jongno 5-ga Station, in the Dongdaemun dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) alley between Jongno 5-ga and Dongdaemun stations. It's open 10:30–22:30 and you can book through Naver Reservation. Cheonggyecheon, Bangsan Market and Gwangjang Market are all nearby, so it's a great spot to eat after sightseeing.

Let's head in and eat already haha.

Inside the two-floor restaurant: is it good for groups?
Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun has a spacious two-floor layout, so it looked great for group dining. There were autographs here and there, clearly left by well-known celebrities, and the notes and doodles guests had left on the walls were so charming (●'◡'●)

It's a roomy place, good for eating in a group. Even though it was early, tourists kept coming in.
Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dongdaemun menu and add-ons
The signature dish here is dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot). You can add half a chicken depending on the number of people, plus add-ons like rice cake, noodles, or vegetable porridge.

You can also go for a set menu, which comes at a discount compared to ordering items separately. Besides dak hanmari, there's yukhoe tangtangi (raw beef tartare), nakji tangtangi (chopped raw octopus), samgyeopsal (pork belly), king kkalbitang (short rib soup), meat mung bean bindaetteok, seafood mung bean bindaetteok, naengmyeon (cold noodles) and more.

What three of us ordered: dak hanmari with noodles, meat bindaetteok and makgeolli
We ordered dak hanmari (with a knife-cut noodle add-on), meat mung bean bindaetteok, and Bambambam makgeolli! Dak hanmari was a given, and since Sunhuine originally became famous for its bindaetteok in Gwangjang Market, we ordered that too haha.
How to make the sauce and enjoy dak hanmari — make the sauce first, then bring the pot to a boil; once the rice cake floats up, start eating.

How to mix the dak hanmari dipping sauce
They gave us a bowl of pickled onions, kimchi, and vegetables for dipping the dak hanmari.

Mix in minced garlic, mustard, soy sauce, vinegar and chili paste to taste!

How was the meat mung bean bindaetteok?

Crispy outside, moist inside — the textbook definition of crispy-on-the-outside-soft-on-the-inside! The thick pancake was packed with meat, so the texture was great to chew through. Bindaetteok at Sunhuine is a must, no question haha.

Meat mung bean bindaetteok and dak hanmari — a perfect match!

How to eat dak hanmari, and how the chicken and broth tasted
The whole chicken hot pot arrived in a huge metal bowl! Staff cut it into bite-sized pieces for us.

After they cut it up, it's boiled to a rolling boil. After about 5 minutes the rice cake floats up — eat the rice cake and vegetables first, and once the potatoes are cooked, dig into the chicken too.

The dak hanmari bubbling away deliciously. We scooped up the well-cooked rice cake, then the tender chicken.

Dipping into that special sauce is the whole point! Taking a bite of well-cooked chicken dipped in the sauce, the clean yet spicy-tangy flavor spread all through my mouth. There was zero gamey smell and the meat was so tender that we ate like crazy haha.

Finishing the pot with the knife-cut noodle add-on
Once we'd scooped out almost all the chicken, in went the knife-cut noodles! With the noodles dropped into that rich, deeply reduced chicken broth, there's no way it could taste bad >< Slurping the noodles with kimchi once they hit the perfect chewy texture — wow, all I could do was marvel!!! Even with dak hanmari, noodle add-on, and meat bindaetteok for three of us, our stomachs were so full but it was so good we finished it all haha.

If you're trying to figure out where to have dak hanmari lunch in Dongdaemun, I recommend Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun, where you can enjoy both a rich-broth dak hanmari and savory bindaetteok in one meal. It's plenty to feed a group and there's not much that fills you up as well as this combo haha. The clean dak hanmari broth paired with the rich, savory meat bindaetteok worked so much better together than I expected — I'd recommend ordering exactly the combo I had today!
