Dongdaemun chicken hot pot and mung bean pancake dinner: Sunhuine

In short

Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun is a 200-seat Korean restaurant spread over two floors in the Dongdaemun chicken hot pot alley, a 10-minute walk from Exit 5 of Jongno 5-ga Station. On a weekend evening, dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) for two cost 33,000 won, the meat and mung bean bindaetteok (savory pancake) 12,000 won, and two noodle refills went down with soju-and-beer, with the two-person portion feeling like enough for three. The rice cakes were chewy and the chicken tender with no gamey smell, making Sunhuine one of the best stops in Dongdaemun's chicken hot pot alley.

On a weekend, after watching a play in Hyehwa, I was trying to figure out what to eat for dinner when hot-and-cool dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) popped into my head. I already love dak hanmari and eat it fairly often, but it suits this kind of cool weather even more — Dongdaemun dak hanmari⭐️

I heard that Sunhuine Bindaetteok, the place in Gwangjang Market, had opened Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun near Dongdaemun, so I rushed right over. I went thinking, if it's from Sunhuine Bindaetteok, how good could the dak hanmari be — and it was better than expected.

Where is Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun, and what are its hours?

Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun, a lunch spot known in the Dongdaemun dak hanmari scene, is about a 10-minute walk from Exit 5 of Jongno 5-ga Station. It's in the Dongdaemun dak hanmari alley, so basically every shop around it serves dak hanmari. Note that parking isn't available, so I'd recommend taking public transit.

Besides dak hanmari, there are other dishes like yukhoe tangtangi (minced raw beef tartare) and bindaetteok, and yukhoe (raw beef) too, which are nice to order alongside.

Side dishes and the self-serve sauce bar

Side dishes of kimchi and pickled onions

The basic side dishes are kimchi and pickled onions, and you can get extra sides at the self-bar.

Salad and sauce self-bar for dak hanmari

Salad needed for making the dak hanmari sauce! Getting the sauce ratio right is the hardest part.ㅠㅠ

A glass of soju-beer enjoyed with dak hanmari

First, down a cold soju-beer~ Soju-beer is the best with dak hanmari👍

Dak hanmari for two, 33,000 won: a portion big enough for three

Rice cakes and vegetables in the dak hanmari pot

Our dak hanmari arrived in a giant metal pot absolutely loaded with chicken, scallions, cabbage, and rice cakes. It said 'for two' on the menu, but the amount was so generous you'd believe it if they told you it was for three.

Once the broth is boiling hard, you fish out the rice cakes first — they were so chewy and springy that we finished them all before the chicken had even cooked through.

A plate of chicken and mushrooms scooped out together

The chunky pieces of chicken had no gamey smell and were tender, and dipped in the dak hanmari sauce, they were absolutely delicious❤️

The cabbage was sweet and tasty too, and eating it together with the scallions, mushrooms, and other vegetables gave it a much richer flavor.

Meat and mung bean bindaetteok, 12,000 won

Freshly fried, thick meat mung bean bindaetteok

Since we were at Sunhuine Bindaetteok, it would've been a shame to skip the bindaetteok, so we ordered the meat mung bean bindaetteok too. Freshly fried and piping hot, it was incredibly thick.

Cross-section of meat mung bean bindaetteok dipped in pickled onions

Meat mung bean bindaetteok tastes best dipped in the pickled onions and eaten together with them. 👍👍 The outside was crispy and the inside had juicy bites of meat and mung bean, with a nutty, sweet flavor. I'm not usually a huge bindaetteok person, but I really enjoy Sunhuine's.

Finishing with two noodle refills at 2,000 won each

Two orders of noodle refill before going into the pot

You can't skip this at the end of dak hanmari — the noodle refill‼️ We went bold and ordered two, but the portion turned out to be way more than expected, so I was a little flustered^^;; I like my noodles cooked well done, so I let them simmer for about 10 minutes.

닭한마리 육수에 푹 익힌 국수사리

The combination of chewy, soft noodles with the dak hanmari broth that had been simmering the whole time was unbeatable.❤️ Maybe it's just me, but drinking alcohol with this somehow doesn't even get you drunk..?

We were too full to finish it all, but even so, this tastes good enough to be one of the standout spots in the Dongdaemun dak hanmari alley. I'll have to come back again when it gets colder this winter~>_<
