Boryeong fish market sashimi packed leak-free to Cheongju: Nokdo Susan
In short
Nokdo Susan is a live-fish sashimi shop occupying two stalls, No. 57 and No. 58, at Daecheonhang Fish Market in Boryeong, Chungnam. After dinner in Daecheon, the last live squid in the tanks and one wild flounder were sliced into sashimi and packed for the drive to Cheongju, with ice frozen inside hygiene bags layered under thawing paper so no water leaked from the box. For sashimi that has to survive a long ride home and still work as a late-night snack, Nokdo Susan is the answer.

I've been on a Daecheon run for the third week of September in a row, so of course I came home with another takeout haul from Daecheonhang Fish Market haha. Going this often gets a little tiring, but we had dinner in Daecheon and packed sashimi to go too — here's the review of Nokdo Susan, where everything was perfect from the packing to the taste. Let's go~

Where is Nokdo Susan in Daecheonhang Fish Market?
Nokdo Susan, the standout spot at Daecheonhang Fish Market, sits right in front if you use the back entrance behind Mud Mart! That made it easy to find, but since it's stalls No. 57 and 58, looking for the numbers makes it even easier haha.

Daecheonhang Fish Market is one of those markets you can trust anytime because of the certified weighing containers, and Nokdo Susan also uses an electronic scale, which is exactly what I want!

What's in the tanks: the seafood on offer
This Boryeong sashimi restaurant runs two stalls inside the market, so it's on the larger side! With that much space come plenty of tanks too, so it's easy to browse and pick.

You can pick up a wide range of seafood here too — crustaceans like king crab and blue crab, plus whiteleg shrimp, sea squirt, abalone, clams, whelk, and scallops!

They're also selling in-season autumn gizzard shad. The market was packed with people that day, but this stall's tanks were the emptiest of all — and when a place has less fish left than everywhere else, it just means they've already sold a ton!!! That's what a popular spot looks like.

The last live squid and one wild flounder
I went in specifically aiming for squid sashimi, and wow — I got the very last one left!!!!!! I would have loved to buy a whole pile of squid sashimi, but one squid was all there was, so I got that one plus a fish sashimi!

There were so many types of live-fish sashimi that I agonized over it, but flounder is always the safe bet, so this time I picked a wild flounder. They caught it right there on the spot. This is truly a Daecheon fish market spot where you can eat fresh, live-fish sashimi.

Inside the shop they also sell half-dried fish! Rockfish, black rockfish, dried yellow croaker, cuttlefish, flatfish, and more... you can buy them alongside your sashimi. And on top of that, you can watch the sashimi being sliced right in front of you.

Watching the squid and flounder get sliced into sashimi. Since everything's kept so clean, of course they'd leave the prep area open, right? Nokdo Susan in Boryeong felt like a family-run place, so the atmosphere was really nice too. The owner and his wife were both so kind — good stuff~

How Nokdo Susan packs sashimi for the drive to Cheongju
When I mentioned I was headed to Cheongju, they packed the ice packs in carefully and threw in a set of vinegar-gochujang sauce, soy sauce, and wasabi too! The taping was done neatly as well, making it perfect to carry.

One squid, one wild flounder. I packed it to eat as a late-night snack after dinner, and honestly it was just the right amount and mix for two people haha.

Set up complete with the vinegar-gochujang sauce, soy sauce, wasabi they gave us, plus perilla leaves and cheongyang chili peppers — essentials for live squid sashimi!!! At this Daecheonhang sashimi restaurant, instead of just dumping in regular ice, they freeze the ice inside hygiene bags, so nothing leaked. Order was: disposable hygiene-bag ice, then thawing paper, then plastic wrap. Not a drop leaked outside the box, and I loved that. No worries at all even traveling far!!!

How did the squid and wild flounder sashimi taste?
Squid sashimi from Daecheonhang Fish Market — need I say more? Good dipped in soy sauce, good wrapped in perilla leaves, good every way.. this is exactly why people eat squid sashimi.. It had been a while since I'd had wild flounder, and dipped in soy sauce it was even nuttier and tastier! It's a fish whose flavor really depends on personal taste, so if you're a sashimi fanatic, highly recommend (which is exactly me haha).

Looking for a top spot at Daecheonhang Fish Market? I recommend visiting Nokdo Susan — they pack everything so neatly!
