Kids' doenjang jjigae at a Chimsan-dong, Daegu beef grill: Gogi 9dan

Today I came to Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch, which my mom's friend raved about as a famous beef spot in Chimsan-dong. She kept praising the raw pork kimchi jjigae too! I was curious, so let's go in right away.

The parking lot at Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch is really spacious, so there's plenty of room. But you do have to go up stairs, so if you have a stroller, keep that in mind.

I've lived in Chimsan-dong for 23 years and never thought to come here haha 😆 The building is huge.

We visited in the evening, but the <lunch special> — bulgogi shabu + minari (water dropwort) + mushroom + fresh kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) + self-serve kkakdugi fried rice — looked really good too 🫶

Just a heads-up, they're closed September 24–25 for Chuseok, and due to a minari supply issue, shabu kalguksu can't be ordered from September 26–28.

Right as you walk in, there's an amazing sight. When an order comes in, they slice the meat right there on the spot and bring it to your table. It felt like watching a little performance show.

Inside, the seating was open tables with partitions. It's clearly a popular spot — there were so many people! (After my visit, my mom actually held a birthday party here with her friends, and apparently they have two private rooms haha. Since it was her birthday, they even got free pizza 🫶)

What's on the menu at Gogi 9dan Chimsan and what we ordered

The signature dishes are yeast-salt fresh short rib, seokcheong honey short rib, skirt steak, and flower short rib. We ordered a half portion of skirt steak, a half portion of flower short rib, the ultimate-value 9dan set, and a kids' doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) 🫶

They even brought out a kid's tray, cutlery, and seaweed for us 🩷

Side dishes, including yangnyeom gejang (raw crab in chili sauce)

Let's take a look at the side dishes: salad, pickled seaweed, cabbage water kimchi, japchae, pickled broccoli-leaf stems, yangnyeom gejang (seasoned raw crab), pickled onions, pa kimchi, and more.

The yangnyeom gejang was sweet and spicy with tender meat — so good, and refills are available too ^^

The 9dan set: hanwoo beef tartare and jjolmyeon

This is the extra we ordered, the ultimate-value 9dan set: hanwoo beef tartare, jjolmyeon (spicy cold noodles), fresh wasabi sushi, and pork kimchi jjigae.

Since it's hanwoo beef tartare, it's chewy and dense yet tender to bite into. The tartare pairs really well with the sweet-and-sour jjolmyeon haha. The jjolmyeon is quite spicy, so anyone sensitive to spice should be careful.

The half portions of skirt steak and flower short rib we ordered arrived. The skirt steak bloomed like a flower ❣️

Let's grill the skirt steak first. It's dripping with fat. The first bite of meat has to be with salt, of course. The texture is tender yet chewy. We even made neat little skirt steak sushi bites — the rice was nice and sticky!

The kids' doenjang jjigae added for 3,000 won

This is the kids' doenjang jjigae we ordered with a separate 3,000 won add-on. We got it to feed our kid, but I was honestly surprised at how good it was. It's a completely homestyle doenjang jjigae with dried radish greens (siraegi) in it, giving it a rich, savory depth 😍 We didn't want to waste the leftovers, so we paid the 1,000 won container fee and took it home 🩷

Let's grill the flower short rib too! It comes sliced in one whole piece, so you cut it with scissors as you grill. If you prefer thinner cuts, they'll slice it thin for you too — just ask when ordering.

Flower short rib is my favorite cut ❣️ You can taste the richness of the fat and the abundant juiciness — it just melts in your mouth.

Let's also try the pork kimchi jjigae included in the value set. My friend's mom strongly recommended this one, but it's quite spicy, so anyone sensitive to spice should be very careful 😆 It has a clean flavor, so it's a great way to wrap up a meal after eating meat!

There's plum tea and sweet nostalgic iced coffee, puffed rice snacks, and Americano made with Starbucks beans. There were also plenty of ice cups for takeout haha.

Once you're full, you finally notice the other spaces — the restroom is clean and there's even a waiting area.

Today I checked out Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch, a popular beef restaurant in Chimsan-dong 🩷 The meat was really delicious and the side dishes were plentiful, so I was very satisfied. The fact that my mom booked her birthday party there right after our meal is proof enough it's a great spot haha.
