On a date day on Bongridan-gil, I was craving good sushi, so I went to Sushi Hwa, a well-known sushi spot in the neighborhood.

Where is Sushi Hwa, and what are the parking and hours?

Sushi Hwa sits roughly halfway between Bonghwang Station and Buwon Station, so you can get off at either one and walk over. For parking, just use the Bongridan-gil public parking lot.

It's open daily from 10:00 to 21:00. The dining room is spacious and clean — good for a light meal or a date, and there are group tables too, so it also works for family dinners or gatherings.

Sushi Hwa's menu and what comes in the flame-seared sushi set

This is Sushi Hwa's menu board. I ordered the flame-seared sushi set — 27 pieces, 2 salads, and your choice of 2 servings of udon or cold buckwheat noodles.

There are also extra flame-seared sushi options.

Take a look at the raw sushi sets and extra menu items too.

There's also a sashimi menu, so it's a good spot for a drink or two.

There's a good variety of side dishes too, nice to pair with the sushi.

They also have rice bowls and noodle dishes, so it's a good option for lunch too.

Side dishes and salad served on each person's own tray

After ordering, we waited a bit and each got our own individual spread — side dishes, salad, and cold buckwheat noodles.

The salad came with a refreshing dressing, nice to nibble on between bites.

Eating sushi alone can leave the rice and fish flavors lingering in your mouth, so having something to eat in between kept things feeling clean.

27 flame-seared pieces: which sushi you actually get

Then the flame-seared sushi set arrived — a really generous spread! Great for sharing between two.

It included a variety: salmon, tuna, shrimp, wagyu, egg, fried tofu, scallop and squid.

This is the flame-seared sushi lineup! Coated in a spicy sauce with a strong smoky flavor.

With so many different types of sushi, it's fun to try each one, and there's something for every taste — from fish to wagyu, egg and fried tofu.

I'm a fan of shrimp, and with the added smoky flavor, it tasted uniquely good.

The egg sushi was so moist and soft. A basic piece, but delicious.

The fried tofu sushi (yubu), one of my favorites, was tasty too. This is a good spread even for people who aren't into raw fish or seafood sushi.

There's scallop sushi too, so you can enjoy a good variety of seafood.

The wagyu sushi will also be welcome news for meat lovers — the beef just melted in my mouth. It's fun to alternate between fish sushi and beef sushi.

How the flame-seared sushi tastes: smoky and a little spicy

From here on it's all flame-seared sushi. There's flame-seared shrimp sushi too, so it's fun to compare it with the grilled shrimp sushi.

The appeal of the flame-seared sushi was that smoky flavor — the topping gets a light char that deepens the overall flavor. Each piece is different, so it's fun to pick and choose.

There's also a hint of spiciness added, so you can eat it all without feeling greasy.

Why we picked cold buckwheat noodles over udon

The flame-seared sushi set comes with either udon or cold buckwheat noodles — I went with the cold buckwheat noodles.

The cold buckwheat noodles included in the set

Sushi pairs well with warm udon too, but since these sushi pieces have a smoky flavor, the cool buckwheat noodles worked well as a contrast. If the weather's warm or you want a lighter, cleaner meal, cold buckwheat noodles are a good choice.

Is Sushi Hwa's flame-seared sushi set enough for two to share?

Sharing 27 pieces of flame-seared sushi plus cold buckwheat noodles between two of us made for a pretty filling meal.
