Bongridan-gil sushi lunch in Gimhae with shrimp tempura: Sushi Hwa

Today's lunch was at Sushi Hwa, a sushi restaurant on Bongridan-gil in Gimhae! We had the fire sushi set and shrimp tempura.

What is Sushi Hwa on Bongridan-gil like inside?

Walking into Sushi Hwa on Bongridan-gil in Gimhae, the whole place felt clean and tidy.

Even though it was a weekday lunch hour, there were quite a lot of customers — a good mix of ages, from young people to older folks.

You order using the tablet on the table.

While we were eating, I noticed quite a few people picking up takeout too.

Fire sushi sauce at Sushi Hwa: garlic or spicy?

Sushi Hwa has all kinds of Japanese dishes — from various sushi to sashimi and rice bowls. But what caught my eye was the signature menu item, fire sushi (불초밥). If raw fish feels like a bit much, this flame-seared sushi could be a good way to enjoy it instead.

You can choose garlic or spicy sauce for the fire sushi, or get half-and-half to suit your taste. (We went half-and-half!)

We ordered the fire sushi set! I picked the cold soba, and my husband went with the warm udon.

Before the sushi arrived, we got a salad, side dishes, and blueberries.

A little while later, the fire sushi arrived, and the smoky aroma spread the moment it hit the table.

The smell alone made my mouth water, and I found myself rushing to take photos haha.

One piece after another.

With so many different toppings, it was fun trying each piece one by one, and my chopsticks just kept going back for more.

You could really feel the care put into each piece of sushi. If you're looking for sushi on Bongridan-gil, give the flame-seared fire sushi a try.

Shrimp tempura: crisp outside, tender inside

After the fire sushi, the shrimp tempura came out. I took a bite and the batter was really crispy! But the shrimp inside was tender, so the texture was great.

With the fire sushi, shrimp tempura, and both soba and udon on the side, it made for a very filling lunch.

One thing caught my eye while we were eating — a shichimi (Japanese chili pepper blend) container sitting next to the soy sauce.

Looking closer at the container, there was a sticker with the date it was opened, the expiration date, and even storage instructions.

It's a small detail you could easily walk past, but that kind of thing catches my eye. It gave me the sense that they're careful about managing the ingredients they serve.

Things worth knowing before you go

There was also an event running where you could get a drink or extra sushi by leaving a photo review along with your receipt. Worth checking if you visit. A baby chair is available too.

Where to park on Bongridan-gil in Gimhae

It was a bit disappointing that parking isn't plentiful, which is typical for Bongridan-gil. Instead, there's a public parking lot nearby, so we parked there and walked over. If you're driving to find a good lunch spot in Bonghwang-dong, it'll be a bit easier if you check the nearby public parking lot beforehand.

My honest verdict on lunch at Sushi Hwa

A delicious lunch date with my husband on Bongridan-gil. Parking was a bit of a letdown, but everything we ordered, from the fire sushi to the shrimp tempura, was delicious. The smoky aroma that spread the moment the fire sushi arrived is what stuck with me most! Sushi Hwa is a great place to check out whenever you're craving sushi on Bongridan-gil.
