Family dinner comparing 3 gukbap bowls at Bosung Hoegwan, Yangcheon

In short

Bosung Hoegwan Deungchon Station Branch is a sundae (blood sausage) and pork gukbap (rice soup) specialist about 3 minutes' walk from Exit 4 of Deungchon Station in Yangcheon, Seoul. Visiting for a family dinner with dad and older sister, the writer ordered sundae gukbap, spicy pork gukbap, and hangjeong (pork neck) gukbap all at once to compare. Among the three bowls, the hangjeong pork gukbap was the best — clean, nutty, and never greasy.

Table setting with hangjeong pork gukbap at Bosung Hoegwan Deungchon Station Branch

Today I went out for a family dinner with my dad, who loves gukbap (Korean rice soup). This is a place I'd walked past so many times and kept thinking I should try it, but the timing never quite lined up, so I kept putting it off — until now!! Finally made it to this gukbap spot near Deungchon Station, Bosung Hoegwan Deungchon Station Branch (보승회관 등촌역점).

Honestly, there was one menu item I'd been curious about every time I passed by: hangjeong (pork neck) gukbap! I always just thought of sundae (blood sausage) gukbap, but pork neck meat in a gukbap?! I was so curious what it would taste like. So this time I went with my dad to finally solve that mystery haha. Let me share our review of Bosung Hoegwan Deungchon Station Branch, a gukbap spot near Deungchon Station.

Quiet dining room seating after the lunch rush

This is what the seating looked like inside. There were a few tables tucked away out of sight, but overall I think there were around 8 to 9 tables. I went a bit after the lunch rush, so there was plenty of space.

Ordering sundae gukbap, spicy pork gukbap, and hangjeong pork gukbap all at once

Here's what I ordered at Bosung Hoegwan Deungchon Station Branch, a gukbap spot near Deungchon Station: sundae gukbap, spicy pork gukbap, and hangjeong pork gukbap. I was curious about everything, so I ended up ordering each one.

Basic side dishes: kimchi, cubed radish kimchi, chives, and salted shrimp

The standard side dishes were kimchi, cubed radish kimchi, chives, and salted shrimp. You know you've gotta load up on chives with sundaeguk, right? hahaha

A bowl of spicy pork gukbap with red broth

Spicy pork gukbap — the sharp kick of cheongyang chili

The spicy pork gukbap was dad's pick. Just from the photo you can tell — the moment the red soup arrived, a spicy aroma spread through the air.

Close-up of boiled pork in the spicy pork gukbap

This is the spicy pork gukbap. Pork gukbap is the version without sundae, just boiled pork. My dad usually likes sundaeguk, but he said he wanted to try something new at Bosung Hoegwan Deungchon Branch hahaha. I was curious about the spice too, so I took a sip of the broth — oh, a sharper heat came through than I expected. Right after tasting it, I felt that tingly, sharp kick of cheongyang chili. But it wasn't a heavy, muddled spiciness — the broth stayed clean while the heat lingered.

For my sister and me though... the cheongyang chili heat was just too spicy, so we passed hahaha. But for dad, who loves spicy food, it was a total hit! I'd recommend the spicy pork gukbap to anyone who likes heat. If you're not great with spicy food, it might be spicier than you expect, so keep that in mind when ordering.

Sundae gukbap with sundae and head meat

Sundae gukbap — mix in the minced seasoning for a red broth, but it's not spicy

This is the sundae gukbap, which comes with sundae and head meat. This was my sister's pick! She'd just come back from living abroad and hadn't had sundaeguk in ages, so she wanted it more than any other menu item. It comes with minced seasoning mixed in by default, so once you stir it, the broth turns from milky to red like this. But it's not spicy! I only tried it at the very end and it was tasty, but I noticed a slight hint of greasiness I couldn't quite place — not sure why, honestly haha.

Hangjeong pork gukbap — no greasiness, clean, the best of the three

And then the hangjeong pork gukbap I ordered. Yes, this is it. This is THE one, everyone. I thought that with pork neck meat in it, it might be a bit greasy? Not at all. Never. Zero greasiness from the meat — it's genuinely clean.

If anything, the broth was clean and light, which paired really well with the nutty flavor of the pork neck meat. And the pork wasn't tough at all — genuinely tender — so eating it with the broth didn't feel heavy. You get the full nutty flavor of the hangjeong pork while the gukbap itself stays clean-tasting. If you've been on the fence about trying hangjeong pork gukbap for the first time like I was, it's a lot less intimidating than you'd think.

All three gukbap bowls laid out together for the family dinner

I didn't take a photo of it, but I scooped out just the hangjeong pork meat, put it over rice, and ate it with kimchi... honestly... it was good enough that I'd just want to order the boiled pork on its own with plain rice. Genuinely delicious hahaha.

So which of the three bowls was the best?

Out of the three menu items, the best was the hangjeong pork gukbap. My sister's pick was the same hahaha. My dad only tried a little bit of the broth from our bowls, so he didn't declare a winner, but I could totally see why hangjeong pork gukbap gets top billing right at the entrance. There are just so many satisfying restaurants lately. If you're near Deungchon Station and looking for a hearty bowl of gukbap, head to Bosung Hoegwan Deungchon Station Branch and try the hangjeong pork gukbap!!!
