Boulangerie Tan is known as a must-visit bakery in Unjeong, Paju. I'd always wanted to go, but figured weekdays were my only shot at actually getting bread, so I visited on a morning I took off work! I was startled by how many people were already crowded outside before I even went in... a bakery with a queue from weekday morning, I got more and more curious how good the bread could actually be.

Reading the description on the sign out front made me trust Boulangerie Tan even before tasting anything

What was on the shelves an hour after opening

There were baked goods and salt breads, plus various sandwiches — the signature baguette was already sold out. They also had sliced bread, croissants, pain au chocolat, flan, and even the trendy chocolate baguette. So many good-looking breads that I could barely decide while waiting in line.

The fridge case had cornet pies, tiramisu, cakes, and cream/milk cream salt bread too

Boulangerie Tan also sells coffee beans, jams, and balsamic oil. Seeing they use Fritz beans, I'd guess the coffee here is great too

So after much deliberation, we ended up picking jambon-beurre, chocolate baguette, flan, and gourmet butter salt bread

Boulangerie Tan is a beloved Unjeong bakery where the flow of customers never stopped. Only an hour after opening, people kept lining up, so much that passersby were asking what the place even was to draw such a crowd

How the chocolate baguette and jambon-beurre tasted

The menu item I was most looking forward to — the chocolate baguette. It must have just come out of the oven, because the bag was fogged up with steam; crisp outside, warm and moist inside, with all that chocolate melted through. Not an overly sweet flavor, more of a healthy chocolate baguette you crunch through along with the nuts!

The salt bread was warm too... it would've been great fresh, but we decided to save it for breakfast the next day ~~ (along with the flan)

My sibling's pick, the jambon-beurre. Of all the baguette-ham-butter sandwiches I've had, this baguette was the best. Lots of ham packed in, plus a generous amount of whole grain mustard inside! The butter tasted great, probably because they use AOP butter, though I was a little disappointed the butter was a bit skimpy compared to the amount of ham.

The morning after buying the bread, we had Boulangerie Tan's pastries for breakfast overlooking the sea at the campsite

We warmed the flan and salt bread in the campsite's microwave. They say flan is a French-style egg tart. The gourmet butter salt bread was... honestly a bit so-so compared to what I expected.

But even after the microwave, the flan's pastry crust stayed nice and crisp.. this was totally our style. Something we'd definitely buy again next time

Would I go back to Boulangerie Tan Unjeong Main Branch?

Boulangerie Tan, the famous bakery in Unjeong! The bread was delicious, and buying in the morning means you get to try it fresh and warm, which was the icing on the cake... They also have a Kintex branch, and since it's popular enough to always close early, I'd recommend visiting. And the bread prices seem reasonable too.
