Kid-friendly Osong BBQ restaurant with tableside grilling: Dot Osong

In short

Dot Osong is an aged pork BBQ restaurant in Osong, Cheongju, Chungbuk, on a street close enough to see Osong Station, and its staff move table to table grilling the meat for guests. A family with a child ordered the special assorted platter for 3–4 people plus Korean beef tartare and crab egg custard, and Dot Osong had wooden high chairs, kids' seaweed and barley tea ready in advance. It's an easy choice for a family meal or work dinner where nobody wants to hold the tongs.

Signature grilled aged pork at Dot Osong

Why is it that Mondays always make me hate the idea of cooking? Haha. You'd think resting over the weekend would help, but between chasing my toddler around and then Monday hitting again, Mondays hit me especially hard. That day I ended up missing my window to prep dinner entirely, and before I knew it, it was time to pick up Raemi from daycare. So there was really only one option left. Dinner out tonight! Haha.

You know how it is — we've got two meat lovers in this house. But that day, even though I wanted meat, I really didn't want to be the one grilling it. Haha.

That's when I thought of Dot. It's a place where staff grill the aged meat for you, so mom and dad get to put down the tongs for once! Here's our family trip — Rangu, Raemi, my husband and me — to Dot Osong, a Korean BBQ spot near Osong that we love. :)

Where is Dot Osong, and how close is it to Osong Station?

Dot Osong is close enough to Osong Station that you can actually see the station from the restaurant. That makes it convenient not just for Osong locals but for anyone meeting up or grabbing a meal near the station.

There's a small parking area behind the restaurant, but it's not big enough for many cars. In practice you'll likely park on the roadside behind the building or use a nearby paid lot — the restaurant doesn't cover parking fees.

Inside Dot Osong: a go-to Osong pork BBQ spot for group dinners

My family loves meat so much that this wasn't our first visit to Dot. But what stuck with me most on my first visit, surprisingly, wasn't the meat — it was the atmosphere. It felt different from a typical samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) place.

The whole space felt clean, calm, and upscale, so much so that my first thought was, 'Wait, is it really okay to bring a kid here?' Haha.

On my first visit, more than half the restaurant was filled with what looked like work dinner groups, which made it clear this is a popular spot for Osong samgyeopsal group dinners.

Dot Osong's open kitchen and interior

The kitchen is open, which makes the space feel even more polished and refined. There's even a separate coat rack in the entryway so your clothes don't end up smelling like grilled meat. Haha.

Dining with a child at Dot Osong: high chairs, seaweed, barley tea

One of the first things I check when eating out with my kid is whether there are high chairs. Dot Osong has several sturdy wooden high chairs that match the restaurant's overall look. Even better, if you note your child guest count when booking through Naver in advance, they'll set up the high chair for you ahead of time. Since we'd booked ahead, we were seated right away at a table that was already prepared.

And the thoughtfulness for kids didn't stop there. They also brought out kids' tableware along with seaweed (gim) and barley tea for our daughter to drink.

You know how at a BBQ place, waiting for the meat to cook can feel like an hour when you're with kids? Haha. Raemi's at the age where once she says she's hungry, she won't wait, so being able to wrap rice in seaweed and feed her while the meat cooked was such a relief. The staff also checked on us a little more often once they saw we had kids with us, which made my earlier worries feel pretty unnecessary. Maybe that's why there were quite a few families with kids in the restaurant that day too. :)

Dot Osong's special assorted platter for 3–4 people: what side dishes come with it?

Since there were four of us, we ordered the special assorted platter for 3-4 people. You order through the tablet at the table, and shortly after, the basic side dishes start arriving one by one.

One thing I've come to appreciate over multiple visits to Dot is the side dish lineup that comes with the meat.

Side dishes served with the aged meat, including tofu kimchi

Instead of overly seasoned sides that overpower the meat's flavor, the lineup here complements the aged pork, so it's fun to mix and match. Try a bite of the meat plain, then with a little salt, then with a side dish — the same meat tastes slightly different each time.

That tofu kimchi alone could get you through half a bottle of soju before the meat even shows up. Haha.

Cheese-topped Korean beef tartare with 3 or more servings

Here's something you don't want to miss at Dot! Order 3 or more servings of meat (set menus count) and you get Korean beef tartare (yukhoe) included.

Finely grated cheese is piled on top of the tartare like snow, and at first glance you might think, 'Cheese on raw beef? Won't that be too rich?'

But once you actually try it, your mind changes. The tender texture and savory depth of the tartare, combined with the salty richness of the cheese, sets off this huge burst of umami in your mouth.

My husband especially loves wrapping the tartare in seaweed. You do kind of wonder if it needs to be piled onto your hand like that, but it's delicious. Haha. It's a dish you keep reaching for even before the meat arrives.

How the tableside grilling service at Dot Osong works

Finally, the meat arrives! Look at that color and thickness — isn't it gorgeous?

After a short wait, the charcoal and meat are ready. And here's the main reason I chose Dot Osong that day — the grilling service where staff cook the meat for you.

Staff move between tables grilling the meat directly, constantly watching the fire and how well-cooked the meat is. If flare-ups happen from dripping fat, they'll pour a bit of water to control it — honestly, it's kind of fun just to watch the process.

There's another reason I really like Dot's grilling service: they don't grill everything all at once.

Charcoal grilling paced to match how fast guests are eating

At some places with tableside grilling, they cook all the meat at once regardless of how fast you're eating. The first few bites are warm, but by the end, it can be disappointingly cold.

At Dot, they grill just enough for us to eat, watch our pace, then come back and grill the next batch.

As a mom who's usually scrambling to take care of the kids, having someone grill the meat at its best state for me is genuinely such a relief. Haha. Thanks to that, even the last piece of meat was still warm.

How Dot Osong's aged pork tastes: pork belly, neck and jowl compared

Dot uses hand-selected special-grade pork that goes through a distinctive aging process — 20 days of wet-aging followed by 10 days of salt dry-aging, as the restaurant explains it.

A well-browned piece of aged pork

Take a bite of the well-grilled meat and the outside is nicely browned and savory, while the inside still holds onto its juices. Rather than a dry, crumbly bite, the texture is chewy and springy.

A plate of grilled pork neck and pork jowl

The pork belly spreads that savory fattiness through your mouth, while the pork neck is comparatively lighter but the meat flavor comes through more the longer you chew. Pork jowl has its own charm too — a firm meaty texture combined with fatty richness — so it's fun rotating between the different cuts. Maybe because of the aging, the meat had plenty of flavor on its own without needing much seasoning.

If you want a bit more seasoning, try dipping it lightly in salt.

The Maldon salt used at Dot Osong

Dot uses Maldon salt, which doesn't hit you with a strong saltiness but instead sharpens the meat's savory flavor a bit more — I personally love pairing it with just a light touch of salt.

Dot Osong's signature egg custard topped with crab meat

The dish Rangu was waiting for was Dot's signature egg custard (gyeranjjim). Usually when you think of egg custard at a Korean BBQ place, you picture it puffing up fluffy in an earthenware pot. But Dot's version looks different from the start.

Dot's signature egg custard topped with crab meat

On top of the softly cooked egg, crab meat is piled up like a blooming flower, so at first glance it looks less like an egg custard and more like its own dish.

Scoop it up with a spoon and the egg is soft and moist, while the subtle sweetness and umami of the crab meat come through without making the seasoning overly salty — it was great to eat alongside the meat every so often.

The generous egg custard shared among a family of four

The portion is quite generous too, so even with four of us sharing, it barely went down. Haha. Rangu especially loves it, so it's become the dish our family orders automatically whenever we're at Dot.

Is Dot Osong worth a visit? Today's takeaway

Table setting at the end of the family meal at Dot Osong

Dot Osong is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Osong that my family has already visited multiple times. Thanks to the staff grilling service, everyone at the table gets to eat comfortably without one person stuck manning the grill — which also makes it a great spot for work dinners, since coworkers can just focus on talking while staff handle the meat.

My husband said something while we were eating.

Today feels like my birthday again.

Apparently good meat makes him feel like it's his birthday. Haha. If you're looking for a restaurant near Osong Station, a Korean BBQ spot where the staff grills for you, or a nice-atmosphere place for an Osong samgyeopsal group dinner, check out Dot Osong. It's also a solid choice for families eating out with kids. Thanks for a great meal today. :)
