Guil Baeksuk near Haengju Fortress is a great place to bring your parents for a meal just outside Seoul. It's a high-quality baeksuk (whole poultry soup) specialist where the duck meat comes fully deboned so you can enjoy it comfortably with fragrant chive salad.

The hanjeongsik-style (Korean course meal) side dishes served neatly in brass bowls, along with the deeply simmered medicinal-herb soup, make this a genuine hidden gem near Haengju Fortress for a relaxing day out with your parents. When I visited it was a weekday lunch, and it was busy enough with office workers having a casual team lunch — clearly a spot the locals already know about. The building looks hanok-style, but the interior is nicely done up in a modern way, making it a clean restaurant good for gatherings across all generations.

Where Guil Baeksuk is, parking, and the hanok building with a modern interior
Guil Baeksuk sits at the edge of the Seoul area near Haengju Fortress, making for a great route that combines a light outing, a good meal, and a café tour nearby. The quiet, old-town atmosphere of the neighborhood adds to the mood. :) It looks like it's been running since 1991.
You can park in the lot in front of the restaurant, or there's another separate lot up the hill I noticed. Being out on the edge of town, you shouldn't have trouble finding a spot. ^^
From the outside it might look like an old-school baeksuk restaurant, but once you step in, the interior is clean and makes good use of hanok aesthetics. :) The music was also the kind you'd hear at a café, which added to the atmosphere.
The neatly arranged self-serve bar in brass bowls catches the eye, and using brass bowls for everything gives it even more of a hanjeongsik feel. Every side dish felt carefully made, like it'd be good for your health too.

Ordering hwangchil duck baeksuk: 45,000 won for two
Guil Baeksuk's signature dishes are the hwangchil duck baeksuk and hwangchil chicken baeksuk, but for those who can't eat baeksuk there's also a soy-marinated crab, dried croaker, and stir-fried baby octopus set. I like duck more than chicken so I ordered the duck baeksuk. At ₩45,000 for two, it's great value.

Various side dishes and nutrient rice come out first as the base spread, followed by a generous serving of duck meat and chive salad from the hwangchil duck baeksuk.

They simmer the duck bones with hwangchil tree to make a deep, tonic-style soup you get to try too. After tasting the broth and eating the nutrient rice with it, it's a solid tonic dish for the changing seasons.

How to eat hwangchil duck baeksuk in the right order
- Try the duck meat dipped in salt first.
- Taste the duck meat with the chive salad.
- Pair the duck meat with sides like kimchi and perilla leaves.
- Have a spoonful of the well-simmered broth.
- Finish by adding the nutrient rice to the deep broth.
Tender duck meat with chive salad: the best pairing on the table
The seasoning on the fresh chive salad is really important, and here it's mixed to match the duck meat perfectly. It's the kind of flavor that keeps pulling you back — I couldn't stop. :) I ate the chive salad first, but I'd recommend dipping the duck in salt first to taste its natural flavor, then trying it with the chive salad.

It's also delicious with kimchi and the other side dishes. :) But the chive salad is still the best pairing.
Duck soup simmered deep with medicinal herbs
After eating the meat you'll be pretty full, but a spoonful of the well-simmered broth reveals a whole different charm. It's the perfect tonic-style soup for cool autumn weather.

Duck soup with the nutritious herbal rice
After tasting a spoonful of the broth, put the nutrient rice into a bowl and add plenty of broth — you get a savory, porridge-like rice with a hint of hwangchil aroma running through it.

It genuinely felt like it was doing my body good. This nutritious porridge-like dish leaves your stomach feeling settled and comfortable. I was really happy to discover this hidden gem near Haengju Fortress — the kind of place my parents would be quite satisfied with too.
