In short
Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a makguksu and kalguksu restaurant at 1128 Hoguk-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. The order was perilla kalguksu, a large bibim makguksu and shrimp mandu on the side, with perilla oil drizzled over the noodle water and the two small bowls of barley rice that come with the meal. Plump, chewy buckwheat noodles and ongsimi (chewy dumplings) made this a nutty, easy-going meal with nothing harsh about it.

There's a place I go back to whenever I'm craving a mild, nutty meal without anything too sharp or spicy. It's Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu (봉평고향막국수), a famous kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) spot in Goyang. 😊

This time I went all out with perilla kalguksu, shrimp mandu, and a large bibim makguksu — and the noodles were seriously something else.

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu in one line
✅ Bottom line: whether it's the perilla kalguksu or the bibim makguksu, the noodles are the whole show! Plump, chewy buckwheat noodles get a huge nutty boost with a drizzle of perilla oil. 🥢
A standalone building on Hoguk-ro: parking and the room inside
Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu sits in its own standalone building right on the main Hoguk-ro road in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, so it's easy to find and parking was a breeze.

The inside is spacious and clean, perfect for a family meal or bringing along your parents. The tables were spaced generously apart too.

Once you sit down, they bring out myeonsu (warm noodle water), and it's a quietly delicious treat — savory and warm, good for a sip before the meal and again in between bites. 🍵 You can order through your phone here, or the staff will happily take your order too.

Two small bowls of barley rice, drizzled with perilla oil
At Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, ordering gets you two small bowls of barley rice, and mixing them with a bit of perilla oil is genuinely nutty and delicious.

Paired with the kalguksu broth, it's double the heartiness!
Perilla kalguksu: ongsimi and plump buckwheat noodles
The dish I was most looking forward to — perilla kalguksu! The broth is rich and loaded with ground perilla seeds, so even just sipping the broth alone is packed with nutty flavor.

It's on the thick side, so it's really filling. But what really stood out was the noodles. Instead of the usual thin buckwheat noodles, these are plump and chewy, with a proper bite to them.

There are also about two chewy ongsimi (buckwheat dumplings) mixed in, which adds another fun texture to chew on. A drizzle of perilla oil here too takes the nuttiness up another level. 👍

Is the large bibim makguksu spicy?
I ordered the bibim makguksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles) in the large size. The portion was generous, so it made for a filling meal. (If you eat a lot, go for the large size from the start!)

Despite the name 'bibim,' it's more nutty than fiery hot. Nothing sharp about it, so you keep eating without thinking twice. Drizzle a little perilla oil in here too and the nuttiness doubles. The buckwheat noodles have that good snappy bite as well. If you love noodles, this one's an easy win! 😋
Shrimp mandu on the side
I added shrimp mandu (shrimp dumplings) as a side, and it paired perfectly with the noodle dishes.

The shrimp had a springy, bouncy texture that made it a satisfying add-on.
