Danyang chicken restaurant leftovers still crispy after 2 fridge days
In short
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a takeout-focused fried chicken shop at Danyang Guyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, that mixes its own house-toasted nurungji (crispy scorched rice) into the chicken. After tasting around, the writer bought a box of double black garlic flavor (₩20,000) and a set of two black garlic makgeolli (₩10,000) to eat at home, and found the nurungji and fries still crispy even after cooling and two days in the fridge. Recommended if you're after dakgangjeong that never goes soggy.

I heard there was delicious dakgangjeong (Korean sweet-spicy fried chicken) and black garlic bread at Guyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, so I hurried over. Danyang is famous for stunning scenery like Dodamsambong, and on top of that I got to properly enjoy foods made with Danyang's local specialty, black garlic.

How to find the shop in Guyeong Market
Just find the spot swarming with customers — that's Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong. The garlic bread place across the way, Danbbang Jebangso, is also packed, but if you head to wherever has the most customers in Guyeong Market, that's where you'll find Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong.

Why I chose this place after tasting several
There are several dakgangjeong shops inside Danyang Guyeong Market, and all of them offer samples, so you can taste around and pick whichever suits you. Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is the one I chose after sampling a bunch of them.

I tried several other shops too, but this place, which makes its own nurungji (crispy scorched rice) and mixes it with the chicken and syrup, suited my taste the best! And since I love a crispy texture, getting double the crunch — from the chicken and the nurungji — made it even better.

The flavors are split into original and double black garlic, and since I was in Danyang anyway, I figured I should enjoy the double black garlic flavor that's unique to this shop, so that's what I picked.

Danyang black garlic makgeolli too
Another reason I chose Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is the Danyang black garlic makgeolli (rice wine). They also sell black garlic makgeolli, known for its sweet yet healthy taste thanks to a high black garlic content, so I bought some along with the chicken.

Black garlic makgeolli set of 2 for ₩10,000, double black garlic dakgangjeong one box for ₩20,000

The walk home with the Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong felt so long, and the delicious smell wafting out was hard to resist. But I comforted myself with the line that says dakgangjeong tastes even better once it's cooled, and patiently made my way home.

Opening the box at home
Finally got home and opened up the package.

Can you see the visuals?! It's seriously insane. Even on the way home the spicy, sweet-and-salty seasoning smell was hitting my nose, but opening it up made the visuals even more violent.

Crispy nurungji and cheongyang chili peppers scattered throughout make the visuals even more appetite-stirring.

On top of that they mixed in crispy fries too, giving it a visual that people of all ages can't help but love.

What does the black garlic makgeolli taste like?
I also tried the black garlic makgeolli, made with 100% domestic garlic, alongside the chicken, and it had a subtle black garlic aroma along with what felt like a medicinal-herb scent that seemed good for you! It felt like something nice to sip as a light liquor, and anyone who likes makgeolli with herbal notes would really love this.

Glossy and shiny, with a sweet-spicy aroma spreading out.

Nurungji that stays crispy even mixed into sauce
Even after being mixed into the sauce, the nurungji was so crispy that I genuinely wondered how they managed it! Because they toast it fresh and mix it in right away, the nuttiness and crunch felt like they upgraded the dakgangjeong's flavor another level.

And this dakgangjeong stayed crispy and nutty with zero sogginess even as time passed — genuinely surprising! I expected the double black garlic version to be heavy on garlic smell, but the subtle garlic aroma wasn't overwhelming at all, and the spiciness — not artificial heat but the real kick of cheongyang chili — blended beautifully with the sweet garlic sauce.

Sweet, nutty, and spicy all at once! Truly delicious dakgangjeong.

And eating the dakgangjeong together with the nurungji sends nuttiness and crunch going wild in your mouth.

Still crispy after two days in the fridge?
The fries are fried up nice and plump too, and they're delicious as well. I have no idea what their secret is, but staying crispy over time is genuinely surprising! And I ate it two days after putting it in the fridge, and that crispiness was still alive! That was truly surprising. I really hope everyone gets to try it at least once.
Today I tried dakgangjeong made with black garlic, a local specialty, at Guyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. It was a chance to enjoy sweet-spicy, genuinely delicious dakgangjeong that stays crispy no matter how much time passes, plus the health benefits of black garlic. Markets all over the country have their own distinctive dakgangjeong, but this one, Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong, is extra crispy thanks to the nurungji and good for you thanks to the black garlic — definitely recommend giving it a try.
