Whenever I visit Danyang's Gugyeong Market, chicken and garlic bread feel like mandatory shopping stops, haha! This time, while wandering around, I found something a little different — a new snack. It's a Danyang-style salt bread bakery that uses the region's specialty garlic and black garlic.
They had a sample corner running, so I got to try before buying. They said the salt bread uses top-grade French gourmet butter, which gives it that nutty richness. It came in original, garlic, and black garlic flavors, and I bought the sample set to try them all — here's my review!
Location and parking for Black Garlic Salt Bread

Black Garlic Salt Bread sits inside Gugyeong Market, easy to stop by while browsing the market. It's across from Danyang Bakery, known for garlic bread, and if you walk straight through the black garlic chicken street toward the market entrance, you'll spot the Black Garlic Salt Bread sign right near the entrance.
There's no dedicated parking lot, so you'll need to use Gugyeong Market's public parking lot. It's free, so you can park without worrying about fees~
Menu and the Sample Set 2 lineup

What stood out was that they don't just sell plain salt bread — they also have garlic salt bread and black garlic salt bread, unique menu items you can only really taste in Danyang!
Since I wanted to try several flavors at once, I ordered the Sample Set 2. It comes with four pieces total!
- 2 original salt breads
- 1 garlic salt bread
- 1 black garlic salt bread
With this lineup, it was easy to compare the flavors one by one. A single salt bread can feel a bit lacking, but with four in the set, it's a nice option to share one at a time while traveling, or split with family or friends.
Comparing the three flavors

1. Original
First I tried the most basic one, the original salt bread. As expected, salt bread's charm is in that plain yet buttery flavor. The outside was mild and the inside soft, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy. If garlic or black garlic flavors feel a bit unfamiliar, starting with the original is a good idea.

2. Garlic salt bread
Next up was the garlic salt bread! Since Danyang is so famous for garlic, this felt like something special you can only get here. It had a subtle garlic aroma layered in, giving it a distinctly different feel from regular salt bread. If you like garlic bread, this is a flavor that feels familiar yet fun.
The bread itself didn't taste of garlic — instead, crunchy garlic flakes were sprinkled on top of the original salt bread, giving it a crisp texture and a burst of garlic aroma with each bite. It had a lighter garlic scent than the black garlic version, so I'd recommend it for anyone who wants a subtle hint of garlic without it being overwhelming.

3. Black garlic salt bread
And this was personally my favorite — the black garlic salt bread! Tasting it, the black garlic flavor was clearly much richer than the other two. That distinctive sweet, deep flavor of black garlic paired surprisingly well with the salt bread.
I'm what you'd call a "garlic person" — I like garlic even more than chili — so the black garlic flavor felt much stronger to me than the garlic salt bread, and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves black garlic. If I rank them by personal preference: black garlic salt bread > garlic salt bread > original, haha.
A discount tip when you buy chicken or garlic bread

There was also a useful discount tip worth knowing. Danbbang Bakery, which seemed to have the longest line among the market's bakeries, or the black garlic nurungji (crispy scorched rice) chicken — buying either of these gets you a discount when you also buy a salt bread set. If you're planning to pick up garlic bread or chicken at Gugyeong Market, it might be worth grabbing salt bread too.

Traveling around Danyang buying this and that, you end up with a pile of snacks, but packing a salt bread set along with everything else is great for when you get hungry mid-trip. I'm someone who can't resist snacks, so I tried the chicken, garlic bread, and garlic salt bread — all of it, haha. Each has its own charm, so I'd recommend trying a little of everything.
Final thoughts

It was fun seeing garlic and black garlic, Danyang's signature specialties, worked into salt bread, and I liked that the four-piece set let me compare several flavors. Of them all, the black garlic salt bread was still my favorite. That distinctive deep, sweet black garlic flavor really came through, setting it apart from the other salt breads.

If you visit Gugyeong Market in Danyang, don't just stick to the usual market food — grab some salt bread as a different kind of snack too :) Especially if you're planning to buy garlic bread from Danbbang Bakery or black garlic nurungji chicken, it's worth checking the discount and buying them together! This was a solid find for anyone looking for good food to grab and go while traveling around Danyang's Gugyeong Market.
