Pocheon campsite with stargazing: A2 couple camping at Byeolbit

Last Saturday, after a dress tour and lunch in Cheongdam, my fiancé and I headed straight to Pocheon, just the two of us. On a day when the autumn sky was unusually clear, we went for a one-night auto camping trip right in front of Damteo Valley — Byeolbit Camping Site✨ It opened last year and kept popping up in "clean Pocheon campground" recommendations, so I had high expectations.

Byeolbit Camping Site layout and check-in

Byeolbit Camping Site is laid out with Zone A and Zone B running long along Damteo Valley, with a picnic zone and multi-purpose zone in between. We timed our arrival to the 1pm check-in and checked the layout map right at the entrance.

The picnic zone had decks and shade canopies, so it looked like a great spot to hang out even without gear. The parking lot was spacious too, and the forest view opened up wide with mountains surrounding it like a folding screen.

Check-in happens at the shop in the management building. Since the place hasn't been open long, the building was as clean as new.

What the Byeolbit Camping Site shop sells

The Byeolbit Camping shop had pretty much everything — snacks, ramyeon, seasonings, even mosquito repellent — plus coffee and drinks for sale. 🪵Firewood costs ₩11,000.

They also sold ice and ice cream, and were running an event where leaving a Naver review gets you a free Americano. It was nice that they handed us trash bags and food waste bags at check-in, so we didn't have to bring our own.

Pitching on crushed stone at the A2 site: is car camping possible?

The site we booked was A2🏕️ I was worried about hammering stakes into the crushed-stone ground, but there was almost no wind, so we just went for it and finished pitching in 20 minutes with the two of us. The mountains beyond the tent became the view themselves.

Electricity is provided at every site, so the first thing we did was plug in the extension cord. We could park the car right next to the tent, which made unloading easy, and apparently a lot of people come here for car camping in Pocheon too. The gap between sites isn't wide enough to see the neighbors at a glance, but the site itself was spacious enough to fit both a tent and a car with room to spare.

Dinner at Byeolbit Camping was beef short rib and pork belly, finished off with kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew). Past 6pm the sky was still bright, with the moon already up. Then by 7, the sun dropped fast. We put the firewood we bought at the shop into the fire pit, and my fiancé lit it with a torch — he looked so cool handling the fire like a pro🔥

That's also when we opened the Korean whiskey Kihyeon we'd picked up at the army mart. Dinner started with beef short rib alongside the fire-gazing, followed by pork belly. We finished with a bubbling kimchi jjigae🤤

Once the firewood burns down to charcoal, the trick is to tuck in foil-wrapped sweet potatoes✔️ We pulled them out a while later and they were yellow and cooked through — a perfect dessert🍠 We said we were full, and still ended up mixing rice into the leftover stew that night.

How many stars can you see at Byeolbit Camping Site?

As the night deepened, I understood why the place is named Byeolbit (starlight) Camping. "Stars pouring down when you look up" was exactly right. Even shot on an iPhone, Cassiopeia, Perseus and Auriga came out clearly✨

It was such fun opening a stargazing app and finding Cygnus and Vega one by one on that Damteo Valley night in Pocheon. My fiancé said he saw a shooting star streak by, but I missed it — so disappointing😂

The facilities at Byeolbit Camping were cleaner than I expected. The restrooms are separated by gender, with three stalls on the women's side. It had been a long time since I'd seen a place that keeps the toilet water blue with cleaning solution, and the toilet paper was so well stocked that the roll I brought felt unnecessary. The women's restroom and showers are in the building on the left, with the sinks and men's facilities on the right.

When I went to do the dishes the next morning, there were about six or seven sinks, plus a microwave and an electric kettle. The showers were also fairly spacious and clean, so washing up wasn't uncomfortable at all.

Even the recycling area was well organized, which told me this place really cares about upkeep. Checkout is at 11. We started packing up leisurely around 10 and were done and out within an hour.

Is Byeolbit Camping Site worth it?
