Soseonam Hwangto Village Pension is a clay-room (hwangto-bang, an ochre earthen-walled room) pension on Daejam 2-gil in Danseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungbuk. I was looking for a quiet place to rest while traveling around Danyang, and since I went with a friend, we used the double clay room for ₩80,000.

Right across from the guesthouse a majestic mountain unfolds, and there's a valley and a walking path nearby too, so it felt like a proper rest in nature. I was so satisfied I'd love to come back in summer to play in the valley 😊

This isn't so much a stay in downtown Danyang as it is a spot to enjoy the nature of Seonam Valley and Soseonam Recreation Forest. 🌿 Coming back after sightseeing to somewhere this quiet, with a mountain right in front and a valley close by, felt like a total escape from the crowded tourist spots.

Check-in, the building and the parking lot

I arrived right at check-in time and the owner greeted me warmly. Really kind, and it made me happy the whole stay. There was a sign saying "the village head's house" — I wondered if the owner really was the village head... (immediately convinced.)

The exterior looks like this. The left side was the building I stayed in, and the right side seemed to be a standalone unit. If you're coming for a workshop or a family trip, staying in the standalone unit seems like the way to go. I was so happy with this stay that I want to come back with family next time.

The parking lot was fairly spacious too. The pension is bigger than I expected, so they seem to have made the lot large to match. Made parking and getting settled easy.

⛰️ The mountain view right in front of the guesthouse

The first thing I loved after arriving was the scenery around the guesthouse.

A Danyang stay surrounded by mountains — I really, really loved it. This was a trip I took specifically to unwind, so I purposely came back to the room early, and with the clay room plus this view, I was so happy. Just being at this place felt healing.

🛏️ Inside the 80,000-won clay room for two

My friend and I used the double clay room. Maybe because it's a hwangto-bang, it had a warm, cozy feel different from a typical pension. Like you might wake up healthier after a night here haha 😂

There was a double bed and a small TV. The bed felt like a stone bed. A clay room with a stone bed on top of that — it felt like a genuinely wholesome place to stay, which was special.

What I especially liked was how clean the room and bedding were! The bedding was neatly kept and the whole room was clean, so I rested without any discomfort during my stay.

There was also a TV — and a smart one at that, so I could stream Netflix and YouTube, which was a nice bonus.

That night I binge-watched I Am Solo, and with the window open in a spot with such nice scenery, a breeze drifted in while I got my dopamine fix — even just sitting there felt like healing.

It's still a bit hot in the daytime these days, but the air conditioning was clean and the air cool, so that was satisfying too. Since the place is surrounded by nature, bugs inevitably wander in while you barbecue, but there was bug spray on hand so it wasn't scary at all haha 😅

There were small hangers, a hair dryer, and towels too, so it was comfortable for an overnight stay. And overall the cleanliness was really, really good. You can tell just from the photos, right?

🍳 A kitchen you can actually cook in

There's a separate kitchen set up so you can cook for yourself inside the pension.

The dishware was neatly arranged and there was even an induction stove, so you could easily make a simple meal. If you're planning to barbecue like we did, this means you don't have to keep eating out — you can relax and handle a meal right at the guesthouse.

The dishware was really spotless too. There was a fridge, electric kettle, rice cooker, and microwave, so staying was easy and convenient. It seemed like a great Danyang stay for families, couples, or friends to grill and cook simple meals together.

There was also a notice with usage guidelines posted — worth reading if you're planning to stay at Soseonam Hwangto Village Pension in Danyang. If you take part in the review event they'll take a Polaroid photo for you too — just ask the owner directly.

🚿 The cypress-scented bathroom

And the spot I liked more than expected was the bathroom and shower area. It was clean overall, and above all, every time I walked in there was a strong cypress scent, which I loved 🌲

The scent hits you the moment you open the door, and it really suits the hwangto-bang vibe — it even made me feel like I was in a forest. Not just the room but the bathroom too was kept clean, and as someone who cares about cleanliness in a stay, I was satisfied.

🪜 The small loft up the ladder

Above the room there's a cozy little loft.

A clay room with a loft on top — a layout you don't often see at a regular pension, so it was fun to climb up and check out 😊 The overall space was plenty for two, and with the living area, kitchen, and loft all separated, it felt like great value for ₩80,000.

🥩 Private barbecue on the room's veranda

Since we made it to the pension, barbecue was a must 😊

You could add barbecue for ₩20,000. Once you pay the extra, the pension prepares the charcoal directly, and you grill in the space set up on your room's veranda.

I liked that we didn't have to walk over to a shared barbecue area and could just eat comfortably, on our own, on the veranda. Grilling meat and resting in the quiet nature — this is exactly the fun of a pension trip 🥩

We picked up meat, garlic, leafy greens, and mushrooms at Danyang Hanaro Mart and ate really well — so good. Grilling privately in a quiet spot with good food was great. Buying from Danyang Guegyeong Market would probably be cheaper and more generous — I'll do that next time. (Shrimp is in season and I wanted some, but the Hanaro Mart didn't carry any . . )

This is the view from the barbecue spot. With a mountain right in front, it's even more stunning. The morning view was fantastic too. If you want to be surrounded by nature and truly unwind, I highly recommend Soseonam Hwangto Village Pension in Danyang.

💦 Seonam Valley is a short walk away, ideal in summer

There's also a valley near the guesthouse.

There were signs marking the way to the valley, so it was really easy to find — and above all, it was truly close by. This time wasn't quite the season to properly play in the valley, but coming in summer to splash around and then head back for barbecue sounds amazing.

The valley water was really clean and inviting — I wanted to jump right in. I'm already thinking about coming back in summer to properly enjoy the valley. Even in autumn it was lovely to dip your feet in while taking in the scenery. It's still warm enough in the daytime these days that dipping your feet in the valley would feel great. Worth keeping in mind as a Danyang stay near a valley 😊

Back at the guesthouse, there was a foot-washing station set up like this. Such a thoughtful detail.

Besides the valley, there was also a forest walking path. I went for a full walk the next morning and the valley turned out to be bigger and wider than I expected. It's a path that follows the valley stream, and just walking it felt healing — such a good spot. If you need to unwind, definitely go here.

Is Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse worth it?

I came looking for a quiet rest and left far more satisfied than expected at Soseonam Hwangto Village Pension in Danyang 🌿 The double clay room I stayed in was ₩80,000, an easy price, and the bedding, room, and bathroom were all clean throughout.

The cozy atmosphere unique to a clay room, a bathroom full of cypress scent, a mountain right in front and a deck walking path — and on top of that, adding ₩20,000 gets you barbecue on the veranda, making it a great place for a proper day of rest.

There's a valley nearby too, so it seems even more fun to visit in summer. I'd love to come back in summer myself and really enjoy the valley 😊 If you're looking for a quiet stay in nature or a pension near a valley in Danyang, this is a place I'd recommend.
