Hi, this is Jenny. I had something to take care of in Seoul, so my husband and I went out for dinner at a Hapjeong Station favorite, Jeongyukdo.

The atmosphere at the entrance is already great, right?

It had been a while since we'd gone out to eat together in Seoul, so I wanted good meat and a good vibe to go with it. The meat was really delicious, but the restaurant's atmosphere was just as good, so it made for a really pleasant meal.

Especially these days when the evening breeze is cool, sitting in the outdoor garden seats would be really nice. Let me go through the atmosphere, menu, lunch specials, reservations, the event, and location and parking at Jeongyukdo, a Korean BBQ restaurant near Hapjeong Station.

Inside Jeongyukdo: atmosphere, seating and the private room

Jeongyukdo is a Korean BBQ restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building on Yanghwa-ro 6-gil near Hapjeong Station. The space splits left and right from the entrance, so there's plenty of seating, plus a separate private room near the front. We arrived just as the lights were coming on — still bright out, but the atmosphere was really good already. Climbing the stairs inside, the space split left and right from the entrance and there was plenty of seating.

Restaurant atmosphere

Near the entrance there was a private room that looked good for group gatherings too, and the overall wood-tone interior with brick accents felt clean but had character, making it a nice spot for a date as well.

Seating area inside Jeongyukdo

There was also a separate meat-aging chamber inside, which really confirmed the sense that we were at a specialty restaurant serving both hanwoo (Korean beef) and Korean pork.

The meat looks appetizing from the moment it arrives, right? And the king oyster mushroom even had 'Jeongyukdo' stamped on it — nice touch!

Jeongyukdo's menu: hanwoo 1++ and grade 1 Korean pork

Jeongyukdo's menu had a wide range of hanwoo 1++ No. 9 dishes and Korean pork grade 1 dishes. Being able to enjoy quality Korean pork and hanwoo together seems to be one of Jeongyukdo's charms.

What comes in Jeongyukdo's pork specialty cut set

The dish we chose was

a set letting us try three specialty cuts at once: pork jowl, pork skirt, and pork hanger meat. You can pick either hanwoo beef doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) or gijang-style meljeot hot pot to go with it — we chose the hanwoo doenjang stew.

The basic side dishes were also well suited to eating alongside the meat. Now, time to actually grill.

The onions, shredded scallions, and pickled vegetables were seasoned just right, and alternating bites with the meat worked really well — all the side dishes were tasty.

Wasabi and seasoned salt were set out so you could help yourself to as much as you wanted.

I had a bite of the meat plain first, then tried it with a little salt or wasabi,

and eating it with the shredded scallions too, I could really feel how the taste changed depending on the combination.

Pork jowl vs gabrisal vs galmaegisal: how they taste

Pork jowl had that distinctive springy yet chewy texture, and the more you chewed, the more savory it got — I loved it.

Pork skirt was a bit chewier than the jowl, with more savoriness and umami, and less greasy than pork belly. Pork hanger meat had no fat, giving it a different chewy texture and a mild, meaty flavor I really like — going back and forth between the three and noticing the different textures made it even more enjoyable.

Well-grilled hanger meat and other specialty cuts

Grilling the fresh meat well and taking a bite, you could taste the juices and the savoriness — it was satisfying even without any special sauce.

Finishing with hanwoo doenjang stew and nurungjitang

Hanwoo beef doenjang stew served with the meat

Eating warm hanwoo beef doenjang stew alongside the meat really was a great pairing. On top of that, we also ordered nurungjitang (scorched rice soup) for our meal.

Nurungjitang (scorched rice soup) bubbling in a hot pot

The nurungjitang came out bubbling hot. Taking a warm, nutty spoonful between bites of meat made for a filling finish and paired really well as a meal. It came in a hot pot big enough for several people to share a spoonful each.

Single-serving table setting with a wide plate at Jeongyukdo

Each of us got our own single-serving table setting — really neat and tidy, right? The plates were wide too, making it easy to portion things out, and between the two of us finishing the pork specialty set, the hanwoo doenjang stew, and the nurungjitang, we left completely full.

Why Jeongyukdo works for a date or a group dinner in Hapjeong

Jeongyukdo doesn't feel like just a place to eat meat and leave — it's somewhere you can enjoy the atmosphere along with the food.

The staff serving us throughout the meal were friendly, so we could eat comfortably. Walking out after a satisfying dinner, we saw the outdoor seats, glowing romantically, completely full of guests. Next time I go back on a nice-weather day, I'd love to sit in the outdoor garden seats myself.

There was also a variety of lunch specials — hanwoo doenjang stew, hanwoo ugeoji gukbap (napa cabbage rice soup), galbitang (short rib soup), hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap with doenjang stew, pork belly bulbaek with doenjang stew, and spicy braised galbijjim, among others. These are filling options for lunch, so anyone in the area weighing lunch choices should be satisfied here.
