The Yonggang-dong area of Mapo is famous for good restaurants, but it can still be tricky to pick a place for an important meal or a hanjeongsik (Korean set-course meal) spot with real atmosphere. This time I visited Moyeon Mapo, and as the row of Blue Ribbon Survey stickers stuck by the door proves, I came away completely convinced — from the exterior all the way to the food quality — why it's been named a top restaurant six years running.

What the menu says about Moyeon Mapo's naengmyeon
The menu slides laid out exactly what makes Moyeon Mapo's naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) different — five points, from low-temperature milling to brassware.
- Low-temperature milling — buckwheat is milled slowly with a stone mill to preserve the flavor of the heat-sensitive grain intact.
- 100% pure buckwheat noodles — made entirely from buckwheat.
- 100% hanwoo, slaughtered within 3 days — only hanwoo slaughtered within the past 3 days is simmered fresh daily for a rich broth.
- A table made from Korean ingredients — garnishes and sauces are prepared with carefully selected domestic ingredients only, including chili powder from Andong, Gyeongbuk, and sesame and sesame oil from Goesan, Chungbuk.
- Served in brassware — served neatly in brassware, which minimizes nutrient loss.

We ordered the charcoal-grilled hanwoo & pot rice set for two, ₩50,000.

Blue Ribbon stickers at the door and the private rooms inside
Walking into Moyeon Mapo, the first thing you notice is the row of Blue Ribbon stickers stacked up by the entrance. Having been chosen six years in a row is proof of consistent taste and service, and I felt that sense of trust the moment I walked in.

The interior strikes a cozy yet refined balance. Private rooms are arranged nicely along a corridor, making it an ideal setting for gatherings, business meetings, or family meals.

On the elegant marble table, a wooden chair, grill plate and tableware are all set neatly in place, giving off a real sense of being taken care of.

The opening spread: wrap vegetables and soy-braised abalone
Once we sat down and ordered, the neatly arranged side dishes and main dishes began filling the table.

The lineup of wrap vegetables and banchan (side dishes) served in a basket was a cut above the usual.
- Fresh wrap vegetables: crisp lettuce, peppers, carrots, bell peppers, and crunchy baek-kimchi (white kimchi) are all arranged nicely in a basket.
- Accompanying side dishes: garlic scape pickles, neat kimchi, house-made ssamjang (dipping sauce), and savory sauce are each served in individual small dishes — clean, hygienic and good to look at.

Seafood and side dishes: soy-braised abalone, salty pickles, and crisp roasted seaweed round out a varied spread to enjoy with rice.
The main event: charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo
The charcoal-grilled hanwoo, cooked over the brazier in the center of the table while soaking up smoky char, was pure art. The meat wasn't cut small — it was thick and well marinated, and as it grilled on the plate the sweet, savory aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water.
Once grilled, the seasoned hanwoo comes out neatly plated on a square dish alongside fresh chive salad.
Texture and flavor: the moment you bite in, the mild sweet-and-savory seasoning and the tender texture unique to hanwoo melt smoothly in your mouth.

Pairing: eaten together with the slightly pungent chive salad, there's no greasiness at all — just a clean flavor spreading through your mouth. Wrapped in roasted seaweed or fresh vegetables with the house sauce, it's an amazing combination.

Nutritious pot rice and doenjang jjigae to finish
The highlight of the set, the nutrient-rich pot rice, sends up steam the moment you lift the lid, stirring up your appetite.
Composition: freshly cooked, fragrant rice is topped generously with nutritious chestnuts, mushrooms, ginkgo nuts, sweet potato and green peas — a colorful, healthy and nutty dish all at once.

Mix in the abalone and sauce.

After mixing, wrapping it in seaweed is really delicious.

Doenjang jjigae and sungnyung: the deep, savory doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) with big chunks of tofu pairs wonderfully with the pot rice. After scooping out the rice, pouring hot water into the pot makes sungnyung (scorched-rice tea), which rounds off the meal cleanly and satisfyingly.

Which occasions suit Moyeon Mapo best?
Moyeon Mapo, near Gongdeok in Yonggang-dong, Mapo, was a hanjeongsik restaurant with all three things you'd want: refined food quality, a carefully composed table, and an upscale, private atmosphere.

It was one of the best meals I've had, one where I could see and taste for myself why it's been chosen Blue Ribbon six years running — and I'd recommend it without hesitation to anyone near Mapo who wants to spend precious time with loved ones over neat hanwoo grill and nutrient-rich pot rice.
