Pyeongtaek pork soup restaurant with hearty fillings: Old Gyeongseong Sundaeguk

On a weekend morning, you’re tired, and trying to fit in a meal before going out with the kids is no easy task, right? So while wondering, “What should we eat today?” 🤔 I headed straight to a place I wholeheartedly recommend as a gukbap lover! It’s Old Gyeongseong Sundaeguk, a great gukbap spot in Dongsak-dong, Pyeongtaek.

Old Gyeongseong Sundaeguk has its main branch in Yongin! I visited the Yongin main branch about two years ago? I remember enjoying it then, too. Since I could find it in Dongsak-dong, Pyeongtaek, I went to check it out. It was just the place to fill up well and have a tasty meal before setting off on an outing with the kids.

Closed only on Sundays.

Hours and visitor information

Hours are 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with a break from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, and last orders at 9:30 PM. They also offer delivery, takeout, and group visits, so keep that in mind 😌

A clean interior and kiosk ordering

The interior was clean and comfortable, which I loved. Even while we were eating, quite a few customers came in for takeout, and delivery orders kept coming in. It must really be a gukbap place that locals keep returning to.

Ordering is easy at the kiosk. A range of seasonings is neatly set out below, too. I especially loved that Cheongyang chili peppers were available separately! 👍👍👍 As someone who loves piling Cheongyang peppers into gukbap, it was completely my thing 🫠🤭

Trying the spicy pork gukbap and sundae-guk

I brought back some extra onion and peppers from the self-service bar, haha. They’re the inseparable partners that sundae-guk (Korean blood sausage soup) can’t do without 🙌

We ordered 1 spicy pork gukbap and 2 sundae-guk. The spicy pork gukbap came out first! Oh wow… it has a real kick!!! Haha, it was spicier than I expected, so after one sip of the broth I thought, “Oh? This is pretty spicy!” If you can’t handle heat, keep that in mind when ordering! 🌶️ Still, I think people who love a fiery gukbap will be right up their alley. 👍

Next came the sundae-guk. Can you see how much is in there? 👀 It was generously packed with meat, sundae (Korean blood sausage), and all kinds of pork cuts. Every spoonful kept bringing up more fillings, so the portion was seriously generous, haha. The broth was rich and deeply flavorful, too 🥹

Sundae-guk that even my child said was delicious

I was feeding her at first, but she gave me a thumbs-up and said it was delicious! Then she even asked for the bowl and started eating by herself, my little queen 👑 haha. As she ate, the owner must have noticed that the broth was running a little low and generously brought us extra. Don’t you just love that kind of thoughtfulness? 🥹 Ten out of ten, a hundred thousand points, a million points! 👍

The meat was genuinely cut in big pieces, and even the fattier cuts were tender with a pleasant chew and went down so smoothly.

Maybe because her mom is a sundae-guk lover, my daughter now shakes her head right away and goes, “Eww!” when I suggest eating sundae-guk, haha. But today she ate well without saying a word, then suddenly said, “Mom, this place is delicious!” 🤭 Haha, that’s right, my daughter 😆 That’s how you slowly get drawn into sundae-guk 🐷

As we ate, I also noticed many customers visiting with children. There are lots of hospitals nearby, including a pediatric clinic, so after stopping by the hospital on a weekend, it seems like a good place to drag your tired self in for a simple but filling meal before going home. I’m 200% willing to come back.
