1-person BBQ portions near Icheon Terminal: Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan

In short

Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi is a newly opened charcoal-grilled marinated pork restaurant at the entrance of the food alley by Icheon Terminal in Gyeonggi. One portion of red fresh pork belly (16,000 won) and one portion of red dongeurangttaeng, round-cut pork neck (15,000 won), plus rice and two bottles of soju came to 42,500 won for two, and a soybean paste stew arrived free as an opening service. Because the marinade contains no gochujang, Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi tastes more of gentle seasoning and charcoal smoke than of chilli heat.

This time I visited a barbecue restaurant in Icheon where you can eat something a bit different! I went to 'Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi (정실장네빨간고기).' I found it while looking for good places near the terminal to enjoy a Friday night in Icheon, and the name itself — 'red meat' — made me so curious haha. Here's the review :)

Where is Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi, and what are the hours?

Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi is at 23 Jungnicheon-ro 97beon-gil, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do — you'll spot it right away as you head from Icheon Terminal toward the restaurant alley. It's a newly opened place. Hours are Wednesday to Monday, 14:00 to 1:00 the next day (last order 00:30), closed every Tuesday, and there's no parking.

You'll find it right away as you walk from Icheon Terminal toward the restaurant alley~~ Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi is apparently the second sister restaurant to Jeongsiljangne Sulzip (정실장네술집)! If you already knew about that place, this one should feel even more welcoming 😬

I was so curious about the red raw pork belly and red round-cut pork that I planned to order one portion of each, if single portions were possible haha.

What the restaurant feels like inside, and is there a wait?

Once inside, the atmosphere was more relaxed than I expected, and even though the space isn't huge, there were plenty of tables, so you could eat without waiting! I went right after work when it wasn't busy, but by the time we were eating, a lot of customers had come in hahaha.

If you write a receipt review, you get a free bottle of soju — make sure to write one!! Meat and soju really can't be separated~

As soon as we sat down, water, wet wipes, and utensils were all set out right away.

One portion each of red pork belly and red dongeurangttaeng: 42,500 won for two

Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi allows single-portion orders. I was worried I might have to order two portions of each, but the owner kindly told us single portions were fine, so we ordered exactly as planned — one of each! Since it was our first visit, we had a lot of questions, and the owner explained everything so kindly, taking care of us from ordering all the way through the food arriving. I was in a good mood the entire meal, honestly!

Order summary — red raw pork belly 1 portion 16,000 won / red round-cut pork 1 portion 15,000 won / rice 1 bowl 1,500 won / soju 2 bottles 10,000 won = total 42,500 won

Anyway, that's what we ordered :)

Before the charcoal came out, they filled our water first

My boyfriend's homemade utensil rest lol he was quietly fiddling with something and it turned out he'd folded the chopstick wrapper into a stand for the spoon and chopsticks. Good idea 👍🏻

Banchan: water kimchi, lettuce wraps, egg roll and shredded scallion

The basic banchan (side dishes) at Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi include water kimchi, lettuce wraps, egg roll, a couple of kimchi varieties, and shredded scallion. They came out one by one, and the water kimchi was genuinely so good. Eating a bite between rounds of meat totally resets your palate.

The lettuce wraps and egg roll came out too! I couldn't believe there was an egg roll included ㅠㅠㅠㅠ that's probably why the menu listed egg roll as an 'extra.'

With the kimchi and shredded scallion, all the banchan had arrived. It was such a generous spread that we kept snacking on it before the meat even came out ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ

What cut is red dongeurangttaeng, and how does it taste off the charcoal?

The owner explained that the red round-cut pork is pork neck sliced into round pieces. As soon as the fire came out, the meat arrived too. This is exactly the red raw pork belly and red round-cut pork I'd been curious about! Unlike regular meat, the red seasoning coats the surface, so even before grilling, the visual is clearly different.

With soju ordered, time to grill it up carefully :) Maybe because it's charcoal, but once the meat hit the grill, the smell... the smell... the aroma alone was on a whole different level. Meat really does taste best grilled over charcoal I guess.... Since it's pre-seasoned, we kept flipping it carefully to avoid burning.

Nicely cooked red raw pork belly and red round-cut pork! Since the seasoning doesn't include gochujang, it wasn't as spicy as I'd expected. Instead, there was a mellow seasoning flavor plus the charcoal aroma, giving it a taste quite different from regular grilled meat :)

Alright... let's start with the soju first. The meat is so good the alcohol goes down way too easily (pretending to be a seasoned drinker)

Free soybean paste stew plus a 1,500 won bowl of rice

While we were eating, a bowl of soybean paste stew (doenjang jjigae) suddenly showed up — the owner said it was a complimentary opening service ㅠㅠㅠ One taste and I thought, okay, I definitely need rice for this, so we added a bowl of rice (1,500 won).

The moment I tasted the broth, all I could think of was drinking rice — you know, that rice you eat while drinking? Straight into the bowl it went.

A spoonful of rice mixed into the stew

Putting meat on top of that drinking rice is a delicious-plus-delicious combo.

A bite of rice topped with grilled meat

Yep... that's how we finished off a bottle of soju each and headed out.

Who should eat at Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi?

Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi was where we ended up after debating dinner options in Icheon! If you're looking for a charcoal BBQ spot near Icheon Terminal, or you're curious about something a little different from the usual pork belly, this place is worth a visit!! Had a great meal today, hehe. That's the end of my review of 'Jeongsiljangne Ppalgan Gogi,' an Icheon Terminal favorite.

The story doesn't quite end there.... We were laughing with the owner about heading to Jeongsiljangne Sulzip for round two, but sadly there were no seats available, so we just went straight home....
