Today's post is a review of Bomseol, a Korean restaurant known for hanjeongsik in Chowol, Gwangju, Gyeonggi.

Bomseol's exterior and parking: plenty of room out front

Among the hanjeongsik restaurants in Chowol, Gwangju, I'd been curious about this one for a while since it's run directly by a master of Korean cuisine — and I finally made it there with my husband, haha.

Bomseol sits in a quiet spot right next to Gyeongan Stream. With almost no other shops nearby, the first thing I noticed was how much calmer and quieter it felt compared to downtown.

There's a wide parking area in both front and back, so I could visit without worrying about parking at all.

It has a hanok (traditional Korean house) style feel, like a renovated wooden house.

Inside Bomseol: warm hanok interior and Gyeongan Stream views

Thanks to the exposed rafters and hanji (traditional paper) lighting, the space was full of a cozy, warm atmosphere.

Sit by the window and you get the Gyeongan Stream view right there — looking at it, my husband and I even said, 'let's keep coming here as regulars even when we're old,' haha.

A waiting area that feels like a café

Near the entrance there's a waiting area with coffee, tea, and even puffed rice snacks — it felt almost like a small café.

Self-bar with unlimited banchan and barley bibimbap

Any banchan you run low on can be freely refilled at the self-bar, and the barley bibimbap is unlimited too — a setup that would satisfy even a big eater.

What comes in Bomseol's nine-dish banchan spread

Along with the main dish, a full spread of 9 banchan (side dishes) came out.

Various namul (seasoned vegetables), kimchi, and other seasoned side dishes were all neatly plated, exactly the style I usually like — I felt like I could finish a whole bowl of rice on the banchan alone.

The seasoning wasn't strong, more on the mild side, so I kept reaching for more, haha.

What we ordered: master's soy marinated crab and master's barley gulbi

We ordered the soy marinated crab and the barley gulbi.

The soy marinated crab wasn't too salty, just the right seasoning — really good mixed into rice.

The barley gulbi (dried yellow corvina) was, to my taste, the best I've had here.

The saltiness wasn't strong and the flesh was soft, so I kept going back for more.

Mixing rice into green tea and eating it together was absolutely delicious.

After finishing the rice, they pour hot water into the pot to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea) — that nutty finish was another treat on its own.

The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) was really delicious too, with such a deep flavor.

Is Bomseol worth a visit? Final verdict

Bomseol, a Korean restaurant in Chowol, Gwangju, truly lives up to being run directly by a master of Korean cuisine —

the neat banchan and thoughtfully prepared table setting made it feel like a proper family meal out.

Both the soy marinated crab and the barley gulbi were satisfying, and with the Gyeongan Stream view on top of it all, it was a genuinely enjoyable meal.

For anyone looking for a hanjeongsik restaurant in Gwangju, or a family gathering spot in Gwangju, I highly recommend this one, haha.
