Kid-friendly BBQ restaurant in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju: Sangnok Hoegwan

Every weekend it's the same question, isn't it — what to eat, where to take the kid? Picking a menu every week has basically become my job, together with my husband and our toddler. This weekend we went to a famous BBQ spot in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju: Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch (상록회관 연탄구이 태전점)! Taking a toddler to a BBQ place is trickier than you'd think, but this time we worked up the courage, and our kid actually ate well and sat still more than expected, so mom and dad got to enjoy a satisfying meal too :)

Parking and the room: retro round tables at Sangnok Hoegwan

Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch has a spacious parking lot right in front. Worried about a wait during weekend peak hours, we went for an early evening slot instead. Even so the lot was nearly full on a weekend, which just confirmed this place's reputation — actually, we're repeat visitors already!

Walking inside, the retro interior caught my eye right away — it has a bit of that old-school eatery feel. The tables are spaced generously so moving around isn't awkward, and the round shape gives it an extra nostalgic touch.

True to its name, Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch grills meat over an actual charcoal briquette fire until golden brown. My husband and I aren't big fans of meat cooked on electric grills — we prefer that charcoal-smoke aroma you get from briquette or wire-rack grilling.

What we ordered: mixed pork platter and doenjang jjigae

After a long look at the menu, we — being the type who like to try a bit of everything — went with the mixed pork platter. Since we had our kid with us we also added doenjang jjigae and a bowl of rice. Beyond meat, the menu covers a wide range including seafood, grilled prawns, octopus, grilled shellfish and seafood ramyeon. My kind of place... 💗

Is the mixed pork platter enough for two?

As soon as we ordered, the charcoal fire was set into that nostalgic round table and the side dishes were laid out. Then the mixed pork platter arrived — the cuts were thick and clearly fresh. Cooking over charcoal seemed to make everything cook even faster.

The platter came generously loaded with samgyeopsal (pork belly), hangjeongsal (pork jowl), moksal (pork neck) and more. The portion was just right for two and left us full. Thanks to the heat of the charcoal, the outside crisped up while the inside stayed juicy and burst with flavor!

Doenjang jjigae mild enough for a child

It just feels off to eat BBQ without a stew, right? This doenjang jjigae had that clean, homemade-soybean-paste taste without any heaviness. It wasn't spicy at all, so I scooped out the tofu and mushrooms for our kid, who kept asking for more. It paired really well with the meat too. Dishes came out fast, and cooking over charcoal meant everything was ready even quicker — very satisfying... 💗

Side dishes are self-serve, with free refills. There's pineapple too, which I grab every time — grilled on the pan, it's a real treat 💗

Can you bring a child? Ventilation and atmosphere

Taking a toddler to a BBQ place on a weekend usually means bracing yourself a bit. I worried we'd be eating through a haze of smoke, but the ventilation here turned out better than expected — no stinging eyes at all.

The atmosphere isn't too loud and has a warm, homey feel, and with the good meat quality and our kid eating well, we find ourselves coming back often on weekend evenings.
