Dongdaemun galbitang with tablet ordering and rice refills: Hoegi Wang
In short
Hoegi Wang Galbitang is a galbitang (beef short rib soup) restaurant on Iun-ro in Dongdaemun, Seoul, about 300m from Hoegi Station Exit 1. Orders go through a tablet at the table, and two diners paid 37,000 won in total for the meat-packed aronsatae galbitang at 19,000 won and the strength-recovery special galbitang with three ribs at 18,000 won, with rice and basic side dishes refillable at the self-serve bar. If the amount of meat matters most, the aronsatae galbitang at Hoegi Wang Galbitang is the more satisfying bowl.

Now that the weather's cooling down a bit, you start craving hot soup, haha.

So this time I went looking for a good galbitang spot near Hoegi Station and found Hoegi Wang Galbitang 🙌 I figured all galbitang tastes about the same, but here the meat portion alone was already impressive haha. That day I tried both the meat-packed aronsatae galbitang and the strength-recovery special galbitang with three ribs 🥩

Where is Hoegi Wang Galbitang, and how far is it from Hoegi Station?
Hoegi Wang Galbitang sits along the walk from Hoegi Station toward Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. It's about 300m from Hoegi Station Exit 1, so it's easy to reach, and it's not far from Kyung Hee University either — a solid option if you're looking for Korean food near Kyung Hee University.

You can spot a photo of a huge rib bone right from outside, so there's no need to agonize over what to order, haha.

Inside Hoegi Wang Galbitang: roomier than expected, with solo seats

Here's what the inside looks like. The space was noticeably bigger than it looked from outside, and there were quite a few tables! Maybe because it's galbitang, there were plenty of older customers when I visited. There are separate solo seats too, so it looks great for eating alone near Hoegi Station or for lunch in Hwigyeong-dong.
How tablet ordering works at the table

You order using the tablet at each table. True to being a galbitang specialty restaurant, there were several varieties!

- Original galbitang ₩16,000
- Spicy galbitang ₩17,000
- Special galbitang (3 ribs) ₩18,000
- Meat-packed aronsatae galbitang ₩19,000
There was also braised short rib, and you could add rice cake or glass noodles.

We ordered 🍖 meat-packed aronsatae galbitang at 19,000 won and 🍖 strength-recovery special galbitang (3 ribs) at 18,000 won! Together, 37,000 won 💸
The side dishes that come with every galbitang

The basic side dishes were seokbakji (diced radish kimchi), peppers, onion, and seasoning sauce. Galbitang really can't be without seokbakji, haha. What's more, they mention that they make their seokbakji in-house rather than buying it. A spoonful of broth followed by a piece of seokbakji is just right 👍
Strength-recovery special galbitang (3 ribs), 18,000 won

And here comes the galbitang‼️ My first thought the moment it arrived was, the bone is seriously huge... haha. True to its name, the strength-recovery special galbitang has three big rib bones in it.
The bowl itself is large and the ribs stick up above the surface, so the portion feels generous even on camera. There's plenty of scallion on top, and glass noodles hiding underneath.

The meat came off the bone easily with scissors or tongs, without much effort. It's the type that's been simmered long enough to fall apart tenderly!

The meat wasn't just a bite or two clinging to the bone — each piece was a good, thick chunk. It's a bummer when you order galbitang and end up short on meat, but there was none of that feeling here 😆 The broth is the clear type, more clean and light than heavily seasoned, which made for a nice, refreshing bowl of galbitang.
Meat-packed aronsatae galbitang, 19,000 won

And then, the one with a confident name from the start haha — the meat-packed aronsatae galbitang! It comes piled with generous aronsatae (beef shank) on top of the rib bones, so if you love meat, this one will probably suit you better. It was even introduced as the best-selling item on the restaurant's menu board.

Where regular galbitang is fun for picking meat off the bone, this one is easy since there's plenty of meat you can just pick up right away. The meat itself wasn't too dry either — it shredded tenderly along the grain!
Personally, if meat quantity is what matters most to you, I think the aronsatae galbitang is definitely the more satisfying choice 🙌
Glass noodles in the galbitang broth

Glass noodles are hiding beneath the ribs too, haha. Having soaked up the hot broth, they were great to eat in between bites of meat. If you love glass noodles, you can add more for 2,000 won!
Self-serve bar with unlimited rice and side dishes

And here's a detail I quietly loved‼️ You can go grab extra rice and side dishes from a self-serve bar here. With one order per person, you can freely refill your rice and basic side dishes!
You know that moment eating galbitang when there's broth left and you want to add a bit more rice to it, haha — it was nice being able to just grab more without feeling awkward about it. If side dishes like kimchi or peppers run low, you can just go get more from the self-serve bar too!
Misugaru and barley gangjeong to finish the meal

And just as I was about to leave after finishing my meal... there was misugaru (roasted grain drink)!! They had 17-grain misugaru set out for dessert. Having a satisfying bowl of galbitang and then a cup of misugaru afterward felt like properly finishing a full Korean meal course 🤣

Next to it was barley gangjeong (crispy barley snack) too. You can eat it at the restaurant or buy it to take home — 1 bag for 3,000 won, 2 bags for 5,000 won. This kind of old-fashioned snack is surprisingly hard to find these days, and I think parents would especially love it, haha.

When is Hoegi Wang Galbitang worth a visit?
Overall, this felt like a place that would come to mind when you want a hot, hearty meal among the restaurants near Hoegi Station. The strength-recovery special galbitang in particular was hearty just from the sight of its three ribs, and the meat-packed aronsatae galbitang is recommended for anyone who, true to its name, wants to eat their fill of meat.
With refillable rice and side dishes, plus misugaru and barley gangjeong at the end, you'll walk out truly full, haha. If you're looking for Korean food near Kyung Hee University, a place to eat with your parents, or trying to figure out lunch near Hwigyeong-dong, Hoegi Wang Galbitang is worth a visit 🫰
