Charcoal galbi table setting at Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch

On days when I crave meat, what I really think of is galbi (Korean BBQ ribs) grilled over charcoal. Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch is a pork and beef galbi specialist in Songjeong-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. My family visits here really often — this is already our Nth visit haha^^ It's easy to visit with the kids without any hassle, and whenever I think of galbi, this place naturally comes to mind.

The menu at Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch has everything except (?) what they don't have — hanwoo (Korean native beef), beef, pork. The lunch special lets you enjoy a generous meal at a reasonable price.

This time we ordered pork galbi and seasoned grilled meat.

And of course we also ordered naengmyeon (cold noodles) and doenjang jjigae, which are essential when eating meat. Meat alone can feel a little lacking, but adding the noodles and stew made the meal much more filling.

Seasoned crab and gim among the free side dishes

Jeongwon Galbi's basic side dishes were neatly laid out one by one — and notably, seasoned crab was among the basic side dishes^^ Finding seasoned crab at a galbi restaurant made me extra happy. The seasoning was well soaked in, so it was great to pick up a bite before the meat arrived.

And they also gave us gim, which the kids really love — since my kids eat well with just rice and gim when having meat, they were, as expected, so happy when the gim came out haha.

The adults tasted the seasoned crab while waiting for the galbi, and the kids ate rice with gim — everyone happily getting the meal ready together!

Seasoned grilled meat on the charcoal grill

Pork galbi and seasoned grilled meat over charcoal

Galbi really tastes best grilled over charcoal. Putting the meat on the grill, the sizzling sound alone stirred up my appetite. I put the seasoned meat on first and went to the self-serve bar to grab tongs...

Pumpkin slices and toppings at the self-serve bar

There were pumpkin slices there, so I brought some over and grilled them alongside haha. And I also grabbed the garlic and oil dish combo^^

The charcoal heat is quite strong, so check on it periodically. We took the kids to the bathroom and went to get garlic, and it got a little burnt in the meantime... haha but it was still delicious haha.

The seasoned meat released a sweet seasoning aroma as it grilled over the charcoal, and the more it browned, the more appetizing it looked. Once the meat was cooked enough, it was cut into bite-sized pieces and grilled evenly.

Grab the stainless mesh grill from the self-serve bar

The stainless mesh grill is at the self-serve bar, so definitely use it~ We kept ours out the whole time because of the kids, but if you set the mesh at the edge of the charcoal, you can keep the meat warm without burning it.

Grilling over charcoal gave a subtle smoky flavor, and the seasoning and meat blended together nicely.

It's delicious plain, but wrapping it in lettuce with garlic or other toppings brings out a different flavor, and I kept reaching for more.

A bowl of Jeongwon Galbi's bibim naengmyeon

As a side dish with the meat, we also ordered bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles). Naengmyeon is essential with charcoal galbi, of course^^ The dessert noodles are 5,000 won, so the value is great too~

The bibim naengmyeon had a nicely tossed sweet-and-sour seasoning, so putting a piece of meat on top and eating it together really worked well. The sweetness of the seasoned galbi combined with the tangy-spicy noodles revived my appetite, and it was perfect for cutting through the richness when the meat started to feel heavy. Rolling a piece of galbi with the noodles and eating them together is truly the best combo~

And if you're Korean, doenjang jjigae is a must when eating meat. The bubbling doenjang jjigae was great with warm rice. Adding the stew alongside the meat and noodles made the meal much more substantial than just meat and noodles alone.

A spoonful of rice, a bite of doenjang jjigae, and a piece of well-cooked galbi on top makes for a satisfying meal. If you're someone who eats rice while having meat, I'd definitely recommend ordering the doenjang jjigae too.

Self-serve plum tea on the way out

And after finishing the meal, be sure to try the self-serve plum tea at the entrance on your way out~^^ It's sweet and refreshing, and it was great for cleaning up the palate at the end.

This time again, we ate delicious galbi with the family until we were full and finished the meal in good spirits^^ From pork galbi and seasoned grilled meat to bibim naengmyeon and doenjang jjigae, every dish was enjoyable, making it an even more satisfying family meal out. Above all, it's a place we visit so comfortably that this is already our Nth visit.
