Sokcho fried chicken takeout at Donmyeong Harbor: Seomin Gapbu Sijang

In short

Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip is a takeout dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) shop in the chicken alley of Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. One box of garlic dakgangjeong costs 24,000 won, and this couple carried it to Donmyeong Harbor for a first bite by the sea before finishing the rest at their accommodation with potato pancake and nurungji squid sundae. After several years of return visits, Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip is still the first stop of every Sokcho trip.

Why Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip for dakgangjeong in Sokcho Jungang Market?

There's one thing you absolutely have to buy when you go to Sokcho Jungang Market — my beloved dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken tossed in sauce)! We've lost count of how many times now haha. No contest, Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip's dakgangjeong is the best, so we've been coming back year after year for years now.

Entrance to the market chicken stall next to the potato pancake shop

It's right next to the famous potato pancake stall in Sokcho market, so it's really easy to find! If you're just walking by and think, huh, why are so many people gathered here? — that's Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip :d

At this Sokcho dakgangjeong favorite, we've tried everything — plain fried, seasoned dakgangjeong, garlic, and deodeok (mountain bellflower root) versions, all at least once. That's how much we love it, and honestly the dakgangjeong here really is that good.

Ordering the garlic dakgangjeong and browsing the market while it fries

On March 14, 2015, this place was featured as the 13th subject on the show Dokhan Insaeng Seomin Gapbu, and it's been a trusted, already-popular Sokcho market takeout favorite ever since. This time, after some back and forth, we went with garlic dakgangjeong to suit my husband's taste. Since everything is cooked to order, there's a bit of a wait.

Of course, we didn't just stand around waiting. Right in front, you can watch the squid sundae (stuffed squid) and the made-to-order potato pancakes being cooked — it's a whole performance that eats up the wait time without you noticing haha. It genuinely looks so good that people walking by turn around and get pulled right back to this Sokcho dakgangjeong spot.

Cup-size tasting portions of dakgangjeong and shrimp gangjeong

If a whole box of dakgangjeong feels like too much, they also sell cup-size tasting portions — from shrimp gangjeong to dakgangjeong. The sauce itself is genuinely delicious, and the batter isn't too thick, which is exactly why this is our favorite spot in Sokcho market as a couple!

The first bite at Donmyeong Harbor, with the sea as the backdrop

After picking up a generous haul from this Sokcho dakgangjeong favorite, we headed straight to Donmyeong Harbor, unable to resist the smell any longer, snapped a photo with the sea in the background, and enjoyed a taste before heading to the accommodation.

What the garlic dakgangjeong tastes like: fried garlic in every bite

The visual that opens up the moment you open the box is incredible!!! And true to the name garlic dakgangjeong, you wouldn't believe how much fried garlic is packed in. My husband and I both love garlic, and no matter how happily we eat, more fried garlic just keeps appearing.

Garlic dakgangjeong packed with fried garlic pieces

That's how generous they are with ingredients, packing them in without holding back, which makes the dakgangjeong even more flavorful — a real Sokcho Jungang Market food gem. For us, Sokcho dakgangjeong will always mean Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip!

One bite with the sea in the background, then another,,, and another,,,^^ then we had to close the box and save the rest for the room.

Dakgangjeong and market food enjoyed at the accommodation

Of course, once at the accommodation, we ate the dakgangjeong, the potato pancake, and the crispy pan-fried nurungji squid sundae too — if you visit Sokcho, you just have to accept gaining +3kg. That's how happily we enjoyed this Sokcho trip, and it always starts with Sokcho market's dakgangjeong favorite, Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip!❤️
