Ansan Korean barbecue restaurant for eel, pork and chicken: Songnim Bok Jangeo

In short

Songnim Bok Jangeo Wolpi Branch is an all-you-can-eat freshwater eel restaurant in Wolpi-dong, Ansan, Gyeonggi. At dinner with my family, we had plump eel, savory pork belly, and chicken neck meat with teriyaki sauce for 29,900 won. A great choice even when not everyone in the group likes eel.

It is spacious enough for about 200 people, so it looked like a good choice for company dinners. Private rental is also available, making it suitable for family gatherings as well as all kinds of group get-togethers and events.

Self-service bar with side dishes for eel

On one side of the restaurant, side dishes that go well with eel were neatly laid out. And not just the sides—being able to take as much eel, pork belly, and chicken neck meat as you wanted without worrying was one of Songnim Bok Jangeo's biggest perks!

Self-service bar with bean sprouts and rice

Unlike the other branches, this one also had bean sprouts and rice available, which was even better because we could enjoy rice without ordering individual bowls separately.

Basic side dishes served with eel

The basic sides included pickled radish wraps, perilla leaves, ginger, and green-onion kimchi—everything that goes nicely with eel. It was convenient to take as much more as we wanted from the self-service bar. They also gave us a complimentary bottle of bokbunja (Korean black raspberry wine), which paired well with the eel!

Now it was time to enjoy the eel properly -!!!

The wall has a clear guide to the benefits of freshwater eel and how to grill it deliciously, so be sure to read it before eating -!!

Guide to grilling freshwater eel

To grill the eel deliciously, first place it on the grill skin-side down, sprinkle it lightly with salt, and cook both sides until nicely golden.

Preparing cooked eel

Once it is partly cooked, remove the center of the back and the fins on both sides. Then cut it into bite-size pieces and stand them up to grill; that gives you eel that is crispy outside and moist inside!

Golden-brown grilled freshwater eel

The beautifully browned eel had no fishy or muddy taste at all, and the flesh was nice and plump with a great chew.

Eel wrap with ginger and perilla leaf

It was delicious on its own, but making a generous wrap with eel, ginger, and perilla leaves was a real treat too. While the eel was grilling, we cooked pork belly beside it as well. I loved that you can enjoy meat alongside the eel, so it would be easy to visit even with people who do not like eel.

Savory grilled pork belly

It may be an eel restaurant, but the pork belly was savory and every bit as delicious as the eel. Having some meat just when we were starting to tire of eel made the meal even better. And one reason I love Songnim Bok Jangeo is that you can enjoy this chicken neck meat too!

This chicken neck meat had an impressive chewy yet light texture. Dipped in teriyaki sauce, it tasted just like teriyaki chicken, so it looked like a great place for family gatherings with children too.
