Nearly full at 1pm on a weekend at Sushi Hwa

I heard there was a great flame-seared sushi spot on Gimhae's Bongridan-gil, so I went for weekend lunch ~ I arrived a little past 1pm, just after the weekend lunch rush, and it was almost completely full . . . !

As you can see, a whole pile of dishes from finished meals 🫢 Customers were coming in even before the tables were cleared, and I thought, another Bongridan-gil gem I was the only one who didn't know about . . . haha ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

A spacious room with a table for 8 — but count on a wait

Sushi Hwa has a fairly spacious layout with lots of tables, including one big enough to seat 8 people at once. That said, it takes quite a while for the food to come out after ordering.

Why is this place so pretty 🍀 The plants scattered around make it feel even more lush. There are plenty of tables and the store feels roomy, and since there's a table for 8, I'd recommend it for group gatherings too! Just note that it takes a fairly long time from ordering to the food arriving. It might be worth calling ahead to ask if phone orders are possible before you visit!

Where do you park at Sushi Hwa?

🚗 About 1 car can park in front of the shop, and after that you'll need to use a nearby public or paid parking lot.

What we ordered at Sushi Hwa

There were so many menu options I had a hard time deciding . . .

It takes a while for the dishes to come out, but I liked that they all arrived at the same time -! With the sets, you get to choose between udon and cold soba haha.

Sauce: half garlic, half spicy

Sushi Hwa's sushi sauce comes in two options, garlic or spicy. I ordered mine half and half . . . ♡ If you're not a big eater, I think just an à la carte item would be plenty ✨️

I didn't expect much from the inari sushi since it's such a basic item, but somehow even the inari was extra delicious . . . 🥹

The shrimp gets that smoky flame flavor too, making it even better — dip it in some wasabi!

Salmon flame-seared sushi set, 10 pieces, with just the right amount of rice

✔️I ordered the salmon flame-seared sushi set with cold soba, and it comes with a salad too. All 10 pieces of salmon come seared, and I'm not exaggerating, it truly melts the moment it hits your mouth . . . 🫢

I also think the rice-to-topping ratio matters a lot in sushi — if there's too much rice, you just end up full and sometimes deliberately scrape half of it off. Sushi Hwa's rice portion was just right. The ratio with the salmon was spot on . . . basically perfect ㅋㅎ

Cold soba instead of udon

Since I walked over during lunchtime and it was a bit warm, I ordered the cool cold soba. It was so refreshing and delicious. The noodles were chewy, the broth was tasty, and it paired perfectly with the sushi.

But doesn't it just look like it would melt in your mouth, even from the picture ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

The beef sushi was totally my style too, so good . . . ♡

Such a nice touch, blueberries for dessert 🍓🍇 They're frozen blueberries that come just partially thawed. So they have a slightly cool, tangy taste that cleanses your palate nicely ⭐️
