Gimhae sushi restaurant for a family of four after a show: Sushi Hwa

We went to Gimhae to see a show with the family and decided to try Sushi Hwa, famous both as a Bongridan-gil restaurant and for its sushi. My wallet's getting emptier and emptier haha, but the whole family loves sushi, so here we go again > <

Where do you park at Sushi Hwa?

One of the great things about Bongridan-gil is that there are public parking lots everywhere. When I called the owner of Sushi Hwa, she said parking in front of the restaurant was possible too. But since there's a lot of foot traffic and Sushi Hwa is such a busy Bongridan-gil sushi restaurant, we parked at a nearby public lot instead.

The Sushi Hwa menu: flame-seared sushi too

Here's Sushi Hwa's menu. Being a Bongridan-gil restaurant in Gimhae, it's set up to satisfy a range of tastes, and there was flame-seared sushi too, for people who don't know sushi well or dislike the texture of raw fish. It reminded me of my little sister, who loves flame-seared sushi ㅠ She always hands the chewy raw stuff over to me and mainly eats the flame-seared pieces — thinking of that angel tonight ㅠ

The kids' sushi set children can handle

There's also kids' sushi, so we ordered that too. It had generous egg sushi, which our second loves, and the price was affordable — a thoughtful menu that shows the owner's sense for families.

Our first kid loves salmon just as much as I do haha. She took one bite and went 'ooh, this is it!' Even the kids agree — Sushi Hwa really is the real deal among Gimhae Bongridan-gil sushi restaurants.

Raw salmon sushi at Sushi Hwa: taste and price

The salmon wasn't too thick or too thin, so it was easy to eat in one bite, and the price was quite affordable, which made it appealing to enjoy sushi on Bongridan-gil without breaking the bank.

Everything served alongside was a perfect match with the sushi, and they thoughtfully included frozen blueberries too, so we could cleanse our palate without any greasy aftertaste. (Even our first kid approved of the owner's thoughtfulness.)

The salmon sushi was moist and melted in the mouth, but eating all that raw salmon left us curious — what would the flame-seared sushi have been like? Haha, my family kept wondering. Lunch hadn't fully digested yet, so we couldn't order more flame-seared sushi, but my husband kept flipping through the menu. He held back to protect the wallet haha, but anyway! Next time we visit Sushi Hwa, I'm going after the flame-seared sushi.

Pick your side: cold soba or udon

The side dish served alongside comes as a choice of cold soba or udon, so some of us picked udon and others picked soba — and it was an excellent choice. Our second mostly ate the udon, while the rest of us — my husband, our first, and I — slurped up the soba. The seasoning matched the sushi perfectly, so it was a delicious pairing.

No wasabi inside the sushi, so the kids ate easily

I also liked that we didn't have to make a special request — no wasabi was mixed into the sushi. And it was really nice that they gave each table Japanese-style horseradish so you could add as much as you wanted yourself. (It felt very clean and considerate.)

The assorted sushi my husband and I had was pretty solidly composed too.

What comes in the assorted sushi set?

We got to try tuna, inari (fried tofu pocket sushi), scallop, shrimp, raw shrimp, vinegared shrimp, salmon, squid, and soy-marinated shrimp — a solid lineup for the price.

The raw fish and soy-marinated shrimp were well managed, so there was no fishy taste and we could enjoy the meal deliciously. It was the kind of flavor that swept away any lingering regret over not getting the flame-seared sushi.
