Jeonpo tonkatsu lunch set with three fillet pieces: Katsu Gimseondo

In short

Katsu Gimseondo is a tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) set-meal restaurant at Jeonpo intersection in Busanjin, Busan, a 5-minute walk from Jeonpo Station Exit 7. For lunch the writer ordered the pork loin cutlet set for 13,000 won, the pork tenderloin cutlet set for 14,000 won and two pieces of fried shrimp for 6,000 won, comparing the chewy bite of the loin with the tenderloin (hirekatsu) that arrives as three whole pieces. Between the food and the sunlit wood-toned dining room, Katsu Gimseondo is worth a return trip the next time a tonkatsu craving hits.

Hello~ 😚🤍 I really love tonkatsu for lunch... Today I was thinking what to eat and decided on my favorite lunch menu, tonkatsu! And today I found a new tonkatsu place too!!!! Right near Jeonpo Station is 'Katsu Gimseondo' — I'd passed by it many times but finally went, haha 🩷

Inside Katsu Gimseondo: mood and seating

When I went during good light, it was so, so pretty... Overall wood-tone interior + light streaming in through the full-height windows. The atmosphere already screams date spot.

This place specializes in tonkatsu sets, with a range of options — loin, fillet, half-and-half, assorted, and rib-loin. The pork at Katsu Gimseondo is said to go through 180 hours of near-freezing aging and 20 hours of salt curing so it's served to us at peak flavor. *A drink is being offered as part of a review event *Free refills on side dishes/rice

Loin and fillet tonkatsu sets with fried shrimp on the table

One-line summary first! My boyfriend took one bite and said it reminded him of tonkatsu he had in Japan — so moist, a flavor he'd want to come back for, high praise. We tried both loin and fillet together, and the two had clearly different textures, so it was fun comparing them as we ate.

How does the pork loin cutlet taste?

Cross-section of the loin cutlet showing thin breading

The loin cutlet isn't just tender when you bite it — it has a slightly firm, chewy texture. You can really taste the loin's characteristic savoriness! The fatty part in the middle = savory goodness. The breading doesn't overpower the meat either, and it's incredibly crisp!! Not just crisp, but moist and thin at the same time — this is genuinely Japanese-style tonkatsu.

Fillet cutlet served as three whole pieces

Tenderloin hirekatsu: three whole pieces per set

The fillet cutlet I ordered! I always order fillet only, no exceptions. So of course I went with fillet at Katsu Gimseondo too, hahaha. Uniquely, they served the fillet as three whole pieces!! I took big bites, one after another, and each bite came with a bonus of juices...

As for the taste of the fillet cutlet — the tenderloin was so, so soft ㅠㅠ 🥺 The meat cuts smoothly, and in your mouth there's no toughness or dryness, it just melts softly. Meat aged twice really is... different, even I, who doesn't know much about tonkatsu, could tell.

Three sauces: shrimp sauce, tonkatsu sauce, and salad sauce

Three sauces and the fried shrimp

Shrimp sauce / tonkatsu sauce / salad sauce, all served together! You loosen the cabbage a bit with the sauce, and whenever you feel like you might get tired of it, one bite of salad fixes everything — an addictive combo. At first I wondered if the sauce might be a bit sparse, but it soaks in evenly all the way through.

The fried shrimp isn't the super-crispy style — it's more soft with a gentle crunch. It was much more appealing than the kind of shrimp so crispy it scrapes the roof of your mouth. The meat inside was plump too.

Is Katsu Gimseondo worth a visit in Jeonpo?

Jeonpo really is... an endless world of good restaurants, no matter how much you explore. I plan to come back to Katsu Gimseondo once my tonkatsu craving cools down and returns 🫰🏻
