Pohang mulhoe restaurant with minced cheongyang chili: Ppwang Mulhoe
In short
Ppwang Mulhoe is an ocean-view mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant in the Seolmeori Mulhoe district in front of Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. Stopping in for lunch on a business trip, the writer ordered the half-and-half mulhoe for 20,000 won and the squid pancake for 15,000 won, then mixed in minced cheongyang chili and thin wheat noodles from the self bar. Between a self bar stocked with noodles, tteokbokki and squid soup and the terrace looking out to the sea, Ppwang Mulhoe made for a filling, well-rounded meal.

Today I want to introduce a mulhoe (raw fish in cold spicy broth) spot in Buk-gu that I visited during a business trip to Pohang.

It's [Ppwang Mulhoe], right in front of Yeongildae Beach.
Ppwang Mulhoe's exterior and ocean-view terrace
The exterior is a white building with pink accents. Outside, there's a terrace where you can eat while taking in the full view of the Yeongildae sea.

The flowers blooming outside the terrace were so pretty I had to take a photo.

That wide-open view is amazing, right? This is the ocean view from the terrace.
There's also a gentle, affectionate little dog hanging around one side of the terrace? Seeing the puppy before I even went in already put me in a good mood. So lovable 🩷
Inside Ppwang Mulhoe and how the waitlist works
When there's a wait at Ppwang Mulhoe, you register your number on the tablet at the entrance and wait. There was also a high chair at the entrance.
The interior has pink accents and is really spacious and clean, so it's great for group gatherings or family visits too.
Utensil holders and aprons hang on the wall, just so you know.

Ppwang Mulhoe's self bar: unlimited noodles and tteokbokki
One side of the restaurant has a neat self bar. You can help yourself to as much thin noodle (somyeon) as you like for your mulhoe, and there's even hot tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and squid soup. This is the first time I've seen a self bar like this at a mulhoe restaurant!
There were various sauces, several side dishes, and even soup. There were even side dishes for kids...!!
A varied selection of basic side dishes like stir-fried anchovies, curry, kimchi, braised quail eggs, and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) were on offer, and there was even hot tteokbokki.

In the sauce corner, along with gochujang, ssamjang, and wasabi, there was minced cheongyang chili ready to go — if you like it spicy, grab some and add it to your mulhoe or sauce to taste.
How to eat mulhoe at Ppwang Mulhoe

- 1. Try it as bibim mulhoe first — pile on the sauce and mix the raw fish, vegetables, and sauce together well. Eating it without water first, like a raw fish salad, lets you taste the deep flavor of the secret gochujang sauce.
- 2. Add ice and water — mix in 2–3 spoons of the icy broth or cold water to taste. As the ice melts, the fish, vegetables, and sauce come together for a cooler, crunchier mulhoe.
- 3. Add noodles — after eating some of the fresh fish and vegetables, roll in the noodles that come standard and enjoy them together.
- 4. Finish with rice — mix warm rice into the remaining broth for a hearty, clean finish.
- 5. Pair with side dishes — savory, crispy fried squid or squid pancake goes wonderfully with the tangy-sweet mulhoe.
Tasting the half-and-half mulhoe and squid pancake
What I ordered at Ppwang Mulhoe this time was the half-and-half mulhoe for 20,000 won and squid pancake for 15,000 won. The half-and-half mulhoe combines squid and flounder.

The mulhoe I ordered came out first. It's the half-and-half mulhoe with both squid and flounder.

The broth came out along with the drink I ordered.

I poured in the broth first, then mixed it all together. There was quite a lot of squid in there!!
Once mixed, I added a portion of thin noodles, let it soak up the mulhoe sauce well, and took a bite.
Since I like spicy food, I grabbed some minced cheongyang chili from the self bar and mixed it into the mulhoe! (Seriously recommend this ⭐️)
The mulhoe had a tangy-sweet yet clean flavor. It wasn't too intense, just right .. 💛
There was also squid soup at the self bar..? While eating the mulhoe, I had some in between with rice. It was clear and refreshing, and the more you chewed the squid, the more the savory flavor came through (would be paradise with fish cake added).

The squid pancake was fried crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, keeping the squid's texture intact. It tasted even better paired with the mulhoe. ( ദ്ദി ˙ᗜ˙ )
I dipped mine in the sauce that comes standard, with some chili mixed in. The pancake wasn't too heavy, so it was perfect as a side.

The sign of a delicious meal is a clean plate, right..? I finished every bit of it.
There are cute candies for dessert at the counter, so having one to cleanse your palate is a nice touch :)
Is Ppwang Mulhoe worth it for a Yeongildae ocean-view lunch?
My visit to Ppwang Mulhoe in Pohang was a pleasant, memorable meal thanks to the friendly, clean space and the gentle, adorable dog on the terrace.
Fresh mulhoe and a varied self bar, all while looking out at the wide-open Yeongildae sea view — it's a place you can enjoy fully, so I highly recommend it.

If you want delicious mulhoe and a filling meal near Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, be sure to stop by [Ppwang Mulhoe]!
