Korean BBQ in Seocho with cartilage rib galbi and fried rice: Galgol
In short
Galgol Yeontanjip Seocho Gyodae Branch is a charcoal-fire Korean BBQ restaurant with an old-school feel, a minute from Gyodae Station in Seocho, Seoul. On an after-work visit with a coworker, the table held two servings of charcoal-grilled pork belly with coarse salt, cartilage rib galbi and diced charcoal fried rice, plus draft beer and an omija (schisandra berry) highball, and the room was nearly full even on a Tuesday evening. The pork belly justified its price, and the run from galbi to fried rice made the whole meal worth repeating.

My coworker and I had had a rough day at work and were craving pork belly, so while I was searching around I found a spot with real charcoal-fire vibes — and headed straight there. I'm a huge meat lover already, so I went in with high expectations, and honestly both the atmosphere and the taste were totally my type haha. It's the perfect Gyodae hot spot for after work or a weekend hangout, so I wanted to share it right away 🫶🏻

It's right by Gyodae Station, so it was really easy to find. As soon as I arrived, the nostalgic sign and retro exterior welcomed me — you could feel the vibe from the entrance. They offer parking and valet, but seats can fill up during peak hours, so I'd recommend just coming by public transit!

The menu and what we ordered
There's such a wide menu — coarse-salt pork belly, premium neck meat, gochujang bulgogi, cartilage rib galbi, spicy boneless chicken feet, seasoned hagfish — that I had a hard time deciding. We ended up ordering the coarse-salt pork belly and the cartilage rib galbi!

Side dishes and old-school tableware
As soon as we sat down, the staff quickly brought out the side dishes. Green onion kimchi, kimchi, shredded green onion, and fresh lettuce — all no-nonsense classics that pair perfectly with meat. The old-fashioned tableware and dish details gave off such a strong nostalgic vibe that it was fun just to look around haha.

How was the charcoal-grilled pork belly for two?
We started with the signature charcoal-grilled coarse-salt pork belly, two servings! The portion felt slightly small, but the meat looked noticeably fresher, maybe thanks to the earthenware aging — this really lived up to being a proper Gyodae pork belly specialist 😎

They carefully wiped down the grill with fat before laying the meat on, and the sizzle was pure art. The charcoal fire has such a gentle, steady heat that you could put the whole batch on at once. If you're the impatient type, it might test you a little...! (me ^^)

Draft beer and the omija highball
Draft beer only came in 350ml, and it was refreshingly cold — the same quality you'd get at a regular pub, good enough to wash away all the stress from work. If you like highballs, I really recommend the omija (schisandra berry) highball. It wasn't too boozy, so it's a great one to start with!

The pork belly delivered on its price — good enough that I'd want to come back. It was a Tuesday evening and the place was nearly full, clearly a well-known pork belly spot around Gyodae Station. With the cool weather they had the windows all open for an open-air feel, and baseball playing on a big TV, so we soaked up the vibe to the fullest 🤩
Cartilage rib galbi and diced charcoal fried rice
After the pork belly, we added the cartilage rib galbi with its unusual look! The sweet-savory galbi seasoning had soaked in deep, and the crunchy cartilage texture was really addictive. The galbi here is delicious too...!!! Plenty of other tables were doing this same combo — a truly proven pairing haha.
You know a carb finish after meat is non-negotiable, right? We ordered the diced charcoal fried rice, and it grabbed attention just by looking at it — loaded with flying fish roe, kimchi, and bracken fern, the deep flavor had me unable to put my spoon down. Coming for pork belly near Gyodae Station and getting to enjoy sides this good too — pure happiness the whole time 🥳
Also, if you take part in the receipt review event, you get a free grilled dried filefish snack, so definitely make sure to claim it 🤍
