Eel BBQ buffet in Anrak-dong, Busan: chicken neck meat at Songnim Bok

In short

Songnim Bok Jangeo Unlimited Freshwater Eel, Busan Dongnae Branch is an all-you-can-eat eel, pork belly and chicken neck meat grill restaurant on Myeongjang-ro in Dongnae-gu, Busan. Two adults ordered the buffet plus a spicy ramyeon, paired the eel with bokbunja (Korean black raspberry wine), tried the teriyaki sauce and ginger strip combination, and refilled chicken neck meat from the self-bar. The eel was good, but the chicken neck meat with no gamey smell was the top pick, and the spicy ramyeon at the end finished the meal well.

How to grill freshwater eel properly

One wall has detailed instructions on how to grill eel deliciously. Apparently you should grill it skin-side down first. After cooking both sides well, you're supposed to remove the center of the back, the side fins, and the head fin.

Sign listing 7 health benefits of freshwater eel

On another wall there's a list of 7 health benefits of freshwater eel — preventing adult diseases, anti-aging, anti-cancer effects, skin care, and it's also great for recovering from fatigue or anemia, excellent for treating declining vision or numbness, great for lung function recovery, and great for recovering from acid reflux, and more. Totally a health food.

Side dishes and what's on the self-bar

The basic side dishes at Songnim Bok Jangeo Dongnae Branch are ginger strips, pickled perilla leaves, soy sauce onions, aged kimchi, green onion, teriyaki sauce, and red seasoning sauce! Exactly the sides you need.

Plate of eel and meat served as the basic buffet set

You can enjoy unlimited eel, pork belly, and chicken neck meat, and they bring the basics out first. The eel was fresh and large, and the meat quality was great!

If the side dishes or food run low, you can use the self-bar! Lettuce, garlic, and peppers need to be grabbed yourself if you want them — they don't come with the basic setup. Same goes for the red seasoning sauce and sesame oil dip if you need extra.

Grilling the eel and pairing it with bokbunja

We grilled the eel first on the heated grill plate. The heat level was just right — great for grilling eel.

Apparently eel and bokbunja pair well together? Eating eel with bokbunja is said to boost vitamin A absorption and strengthen its function, making it excellent for reproductive effects and great for recovering energy.

The eel was slowly turning golden brown!

Once the eel was fully cooked, I had a glass of bokbunja. It was sweet and really delicious.

A thick piece of grilled eel

The eel was soft, and the more you chewed, the cleaner it tasted. Dipped right in the sauce, it had great savory depth. It was thick, so the texture was great too.

Grilling the eel took a while. Since I wanted to keep eating without a break, I kept grilling more as we ate!

Pickled perilla leaf, teriyaki sauce and ginger strips together

The eel was savory and clean-tasting, so it paired really well with the salty pickled perilla leaves too! The teriyaki sauce had a slight spiciness to it. That seemed to cut through any heaviness. Be sure to eat it with the ginger strips too.

Chicken neck meat is the top pick, with pork belly close behind

Chicken neck meat? That seems to be the cut! It somehow looked like it'd be delicious.

Chicken neck meat placed on the grill

The meat was soft and chewy with absolutely no gamey smell~~~~~ Savory and clean, it was delicious. This one right here is my number one pick.

Pork belly grilling on the plate

Last, we grilled the pork belly. When the grill plate got messy, staff came over first to swap it out. Friendly staff! Nice touch.

The pork belly had a great ratio of meat to fat. Chewy texture, clean flavor! We dipped it savory in the sesame oil sauce and wrapped it neatly in lettuce too.

Refilled chicken neck meat brought from the self-bar

I wanted more chicken neck meat, so I grabbed some from the self-bar. This right here is a treasure. It kept disappearing. The eel was good, but since I'm a meat person, I really craved the chicken neck meat!!!!!

Spicy hangover ramyeon with egg added

Finishing the meal with spicy ramyeon

Last but not least, the hangover ramyeon~ This couldn't possibly taste bad. Spicy and the broth is amazing~~ They even added egg to the ramyeon!!!!!

If you want to eat eel and meat all-you-can-eat without any guilt, go try Songnim Bok Jangeo Unlimited Freshwater Eel.
