Hwangnidang-gil mochi shop, 500 won off per piece on four: Tareudang

While looking for good spots in Hwangnidang-gil for this Gyeongju trip, I found Tareudang, a fruit mochi place that's apparently a big Instagram hotspot. It happened to be right next to Goyu, where we'd just eaten, so here's my review of the fruit mochi I got to go from Tareudang.

Where is Tareudang, and where do you park on Hwangnidang-gil?

Tareudang sits right on the main street of Hwangnidang-gil, and while it's small and cozy, the interior is really cute. There's no dedicated parking lot, but Hwangnam public parking lot is just 3 minutes away, Daereungwon public parking lot is an 8-minute walk, and Bonghwangdae public parking lot is 10 minutes — so it's easy to park and walk over.

Tareudang's mochi flavors and the 500 won discount on four or more

Tareudang has hwangnam mochi (mochi filled with cream and fruit) matched to different seasons, and right now they even have fig mochi and mango mochi in season >.< The menu comes with photos and prices, which is handy for ordering.

How does Tareudang pack its fruit mochi for takeaway?

Four mochi, packed up >.< The orange box is clean and pretty, so it'd make a great gift too, and it comes in a plastic bag that's easy to carry around — this dessert spot in Hwangnidang-gil really has it together.

"Tareudang" — a sweet bite of Gyeongju. Nice touch too: since the orange packaging is the same for every flavor, they mark the bottom of each mochi so you can tell them apart. Smart move for this fruit mochi shop in Hwangnidang-gil.

Price and taste compared: all four Tareudang mochi

I wanted to try a bit of everything so I cut them all in half — what a sight! I usually love figs so I wanted to order the fig one, but it was sold out, probably because it's so popular ㅠ.ㅠ

Mango yogurt mochi, 7,500 won

First up, the mango yogurt mochi, which was noticeably bigger than the others. A whole chunk of mango inside >.< The mango was really sweet and the yogurt cream added a nice tang, a great sweet-tart combo, and the chewy mochi skin was nutty with good texture too. A crowd-pleaser, no doubt about it.

Pineapple mochi with red bean paste, 5,500 won

The pineapple one has a bit of red bean paste in it too, and honestly this was my personal favorite! Who knew red bean and pineapple would go so well together — the tangy pineapple hits your mouth right away, and this is the one that stuck with me the most.

Gold kiwi mochi, 5,500 won

No need to explain the gold kiwi — pure sweetness 👍 It was the sweetest of all four mochi, haha, with a texture that basically melts in your mouth.

Persimmon yogurt mochi, 6,500 won

I usually love persimmon so I ordered this one, but since I packed it up in the afternoon and ate it in the evening, it got a bit runny. Still, the basic sweetness of the persimmon along with the chewy mochi skin gave it two nice textures — I feel like this is a dessert that really captures autumn.

Is Tareudang worth a stop in Gyeongju?

Overall, the chewy texture of the mochi was great, the staff were friendly, the packaging was neat, and you get to enjoy mochi made with a variety of seasonal fruits — this dessert spot in Hwangnidang-gil, Gyeongju really delivers. It's light enough for a quick bite and would make a great, universally-loved gift from Gyeongju :-) Also a great combo with Goyu, the restaurant right next door.
