Sangam noodle restaurant lunch for two at 31,000 won: Sangam Hoegwan

In short

Sangam Hoegwan is a Korean noodle restaurant in the basement food court of Sangam IT Tower in Sangam-dong, Mapo, Seoul. On a visit with his wife, the writer ordered a large kongguksu (chilled soy milk noodles) for 11,000 won, bibim guksu for 8,000 won, kimchi jeon for 8,000 won and a plate of mandu for 4,000 won — 31,000 won for two — and found the soy broth thick and nutty, with the kimchi served alongside especially good. With the large size priced the same as the regular and 2 hours of free parking, Sangam Hoegwan is worth a stop for a filling lunch in Sangam-dong.

Representative photo of kongguksu at Sangam Hoegwan

Today my wife and I went out to eat at Sangam Hoegwan in Sangam-dong. It's known as a kongguksu (cold soy milk noodle soup) spot in the area with lots of reviews, but eating just kongguksu felt like it wouldn't be enough, so we also ordered bibim guksu, kimchi jeon, and mandu.

To cut to the chase: the kongguksu was thick and nutty, and the portion was plenty generous for two people. Let's get into it~

Where is Sangam Hoegwan, and what are its hours and parking?

Sangam Hoegwan is located at 434 World Cup buk-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, in the basement 1 food court of Sangam IT Tower. Hours are Monday–Friday 10:00–20:00 (break 15:00–17:00), Saturday–Sunday 11:00–20:00, but hours may change so it's worth checking Naver Map before visiting.

Going down to the basement, you'll see the store with its open cooking area. We came by car, and it was convenient that we could use the Sangam IT Tower building parking lot. Two hours of free parking is provided with dining. If you're looking for a restaurant with parking in Sangam-dong, this seems like a pretty solid perk.

Food court seating and the self-service corner at Sangam Hoegwan

In front of Sangam Hoegwan there's a wide shared food court seating area. There are plenty of seats, from tables for two to spots that fit larger groups.

When we visited, there were plenty of open seats so we could pick comfortably. It seems fine for solo diners too, and shouldn't be hard to find seating even with a group.

On one side there are spoons, chopsticks, scissors, small plates, and salt and sugar to season your kongguksu to taste. It's a self-service system where you grab what you need.

Sangam Hoegwan menu and prices: the large size costs the same

You order at the kiosk in front of the store. The menu is centered on noodle dishes like kongguksu and bibim guksu, along with kimchi jeon and mandu.

  • Kongguksu ₩11,000
  • Pumpkin kongguksu ₩13,000
  • Bibim guksu ₩8,000
  • Perilla oil noodles ₩10,000
  • Kimchi jeon ₩8,000
  • Mandu plate (4 pieces) ₩4,000

There are also set meals that pair noodles with mandu: kongguksu set ₩13,000, bibim guksu set ₩10,000, perilla oil noodle set ₩12,000, pumpkin kongguksu set ₩15,000.

What caught my eye was that the regular and large kongguksu are both ₩11,000. If you're worried the portion won't be enough, you can order the large size for no extra charge.

Full spread of large kongguksu, bibim guksu, kimchi jeon, and mandu

What we ordered: large kongguksu ₩11,000, bibim guksu ₩8,000, kimchi jeon ₩8,000, mandu plate (4 pieces) ₩4,000, for a total of ₩31,000. Two bowls of noodles plus two side dishes was quite a spread for two people.

Large kongguksu, 11,000 won: how thick was the soy broth?

A bowl of large kongguksu from Sangam Hoegwan

First up, Sangam Hoegwan's signature dish, kongguksu. Since the price was the same, we ordered the large instead of regular.

Kongguksu with thick soy milk in a brass bowl

The noodles sit in a large brass bowl completely covered in soy milk. It looks thick in the photo, and it really was nutty and rich when I tasted it.

Rather than a light, watery soy milk, this one really delivers a strong soybean flavor. Being the large size, the noodle portion was generous too — one bowl alone would be quite filling.

You can season it to taste with the salt or sugar from the self-service corner. Personally I love this thick, nutty style, and I get why it's known as a kongguksu spot in Sangam-dong.

Red-seasoned kimchi served alongside the kongguksu

The kimchi served with the noodles was the surprise

What stuck with me as much as the kongguksu was the kimchi served alongside it. It's coated generously in red seasoning, and it was truly too good to just pass off as a basic side dish.

The kimchi was so good it made the kongguksu taste even better. If you visit Sangam Hoegwan, you should definitely try the kimchi along with the kongguksu.

Bibim guksu, 8,000 won

Bibim guksu topped with kimchi, julienned cucumber, and boiled egg

We also ordered bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles). On top of the noodles were kimchi, julienned cucumber, half a boiled egg, and generous amounts of seaweed flakes and sesame seeds.

The ingredients come separated, so you mix everything with the sauce before eating.

Bibim guksu mixed with sauce

It's a completely different style from the kongguksu, so it was nice to alternate between the two. If you're visiting as a couple and can't decide, ordering one kongguksu and one bibim guksu to share is a good option too.

Kimchi jeon 8,000 won and a mandu plate 4,000 won

Sangam Hoegwan's kimchi jeon filling the plate

We also ordered kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake) to go with the noodles. It was quite large, nearly filling the whole plate. The surface was nicely browned in spots, with kimchi and vegetables clearly visible throughout.

I expected something thin and small as a side, but the portion was bigger than expected once it arrived. With two bowls of noodles plus the kimchi jeon, this alone would be enough to fill you up.

A plate of four large mandu

Last up, the mandu (dumpling) plate. Ordering one plate gets you four large mandu. At ₩4,000, it's an easy, low-cost side to pair with noodles. They weren't small, and the filling looked thick, so even just four pieces felt like a decent portion.

Mandu served alongside the noodles

If just kongguksu feels like too little but kimchi jeon feels like too much, going with the mandu set might be the right call. But we ended up ordering both anyway.

Sangam Hoegwan for two: what 31,000 won gets you

Sangam Hoegwan is in the basement food court of Sangam IT Tower, so it was easy to use even on a first visit. Seating is generous, and the kiosk ordering setup is simple.

In particular, the signature kongguksu had a thick, nutty soy milk, and since the large size is the same price as regular, it seems great for those who want a generous portion. We ordered bibim guksu, kimchi jeon, and mandu too, and it was quite a plentiful spread for two people. If you're in Sangam-dong or near DMC looking for a lunch spot with easy parking or a thick, nutty kongguksu, this place is worth checking out.
