Euljiro snack bar for a late-lunch instant tteokbokki: Hyeonseoni-ne
In short
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an old-school snack bar in an alley by Cheonggyecheon in Jung-gu, Seoul, where diners cook instant tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes) themselves at outdoor tables. For a late lunch, Hyeonseoni-ne served two servings of mild-spice instant tteokbokki with curly odeng (fish cake), simmered until the broth reduced, then fried rice stirred into what was left in the pan. The mild level still has a gentle kick but stays easy for spice-shy eaters, making Hyeonseoni-ne a great open-air snack spot on a nice day.

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch: an old-school snack bar with outdoor alley tables
Today's post is about the instant tteokbokki I had at Hyeonseoni-ne in Euljiro 3-ga ㅋㅋ I was hunting for something good to eat around Euljiro 3-ga and finally landed on Hyeonseoni-ne Tteokbokki! Turns out it's a well-known old-school tteokbokki spot in Euljiro haha.
I found the sign first, but then — wait, where's the actual shop? Where is it? — and after some searching I discovered it's down a side alley ㅋㅋ Great vibe!

Hyeonseoni-ne is set up like outdoor seating, so visiting on a nice-weather day was really lovely! It has that feel of turning into an indoor space when it rains, so I could eat without worry ㅋㅋㅋ

How busy is this Euljiro snack bar at late lunch?
Even though it was a late lunch, this Euljiro 3-ga snack bar spot had quite a few customers! Euljiro really is Euljiro ㅋㅋㅋ The atmosphere was great too, perfect for outdoor dining.
The menu being tteokbokki makes it great for a date, and solid as either a first or second stop. If you like that distinctive Euljiro mood, especially now with the nice weather, it's a great time to visit haha.

Feeling the cool breeze while waiting for the instant tteokbokki to simmer, the Euljiro vibes made the whole thing feel like a date — exciting and just really nice ㅋ

Hyeonseoni-ne menu: spice levels and old-school fried snacks
They basically sell tteokbokki, fried snacks, and sundae (blood sausage), plus mini gimbap, ramyeon, rice balls, and more — but they also had instant tteokbokki!!!! You can choose mild, medium, or spicy to suit your taste.
They also have Pikachu donkkaseu (pork cutlet), fried rice cake, and fried odeng, so you can enjoy some nostalgic menu items too haha.

Hyeonseoni-ne's instant tteokbokki is delicious
Instant tteokbokki for two with curly odeng at Hyeonseoni-ne
We ordered instant tteokbokki for two and curly odeng. It happened to be a day I really wanted something spicy, and it came out in a pot piled high with ingredients, meant to be simmered right at the table!

As an odeng lover, I added the curly odeng too, and it paired perfectly with the spicy tteokbokki ㅋㅋㅋ the odeng and the broth were both delicious! Right up my alley.

Hyeonseoni-ne's instant tteokbokki set comes packed with rice cakes, odeng, 2 eggs, vegetables, 4 fried mandu (dumplings), and glass noodles — with so much more than just rice cakes, there's fun in picking what to eat. You can also add extra toppings to taste, which makes it even more customizable.
Instant tteokbokki is better simmered slowly than eaten right away — as the broth reduces and deepens, it just gets tastier ㅋㅋㅋ I like letting the rice cakes cook until they're soft and almost bursting, so I kept it bubbling away! Get that broth nice and thick~~~

How spicy is the mild option for spice-shy eaters?
The fried mandu completely soaked up the sauce, and that taste — so good ㅋㅋㅋ totally my thing ㅠ But... even though I ordered the mild-spice instant tteokbokki ㅋㅋㅋ it wasn't as mild as I expected — pretty spicy actually!!!!! Still, it was at a level even someone who can't handle spice could enjoy just fine haha.

I scooped small portions onto my side plate — slightly spicy but not overly harsh, just really tasty.

Fried rice in the leftover tteokbokki sauce: the final round
Can you even call yourself Korean if you stop after just the instant tteokbokki? We ordered fried rice with the leftover tteokbokki broth. If you order fried rice, they take the pot and bring it back stir-fried. It comes with kimchi, green onion, ham, and seaweed flakes! Adding the tteokbokki broth made it even more delicious at Hyeonseoni-ne.

Between the tteokbokki for two, the curly odeng, and the fried rice, I felt like I was going to burst... but I really ate well and got so full! If you're looking for a great snack bar in Euljiro, I recommend Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch! We came for lunch, but it seems like it'd be even better enjoyed as outdoor dining on a nice-weather evening. Go get some old-school Euljiro instant tteokbokki!!!!
