Jeju Aewol hangover soup with brisket, shank, tripe: Aewol Eomma
In short
Aewol Eomma is a haejangguk (hangover soup) restaurant in Aewol, Jeju that opens at 6am. The owner recommended the signature Aewol Eomma Haejangguk (₩15,000), a rich bone-broth soup piled high with brisket, shank, tripe, and bean sprouts. It had been a while since I'd been out to Aewol — I had some business in the area, and on the way back I picked a lunch spot for a dish I've been obsessed with lately: haejangguk (hangover soup). Enter Aewol Eomma, a local favorite.

Where is Aewol Eomma and how's the parking?

Aewol Eomma sits about 50m west of Sinuem Middle School in Aewol, close to Handam Beach, one of Jeju's famous coastal roads.

There's a parking lot beside the building, but you can also just park right in front of the restaurant, which made things even easier — no parking stress at all.

One big reason this place is popular: it opens early, so you can actually get breakfast here. Opening at 6am, it's beloved by locals who need to head out early, and travelers have caught on too.
The interior at Aewol Eomma

Open the door of the refreshing mint-colored building and step inside —

and you're greeted by a space that's roomier and cleaner than expected. Already satisfied just from the tidy, neat interior!!

I visited for an early lunch, but there were still people eating breakfast off to one side, and customers kept streaming in — clearly a local favorite.

High chairs are naturally on hand, so you can comfortably dine here with kids too.
Aewol Eomma menu and side dishes
True to its reputation as a local haejangguk favorite, the menu is packed with soups: Aewol Eomma Haejangguk, brisket haejangguk, beef haejangguk, naejangtang (tripe soup), beef radish soup, plus sundubu (soft tofu stew) and hantich mulhoe (cold squid soup) that pair well with the soups. There are even dishes kids can eat, making this a great spot for a family meal.

The basic side dishes include a few kinds of kimchi and cucumber muchim (seasoned salad), and

kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) — essential with haejangguk — along with napa cabbage kimchi served almost like a fresh geotjeori

My favorite side dishes showed up too, which made me happy — cucumber muchim and pickled melon. These two paired surprisingly well with the haejangguk.

Aewol Eomma Haejangguk ₩15,000: the signature with brisket, shank, and tripe all in one
We ordered the Aewol Eomma Haejangguk for ₩15,000. Since we all like different haejangguk options, we were stuck deciding — so the owner recommended the Aewol Eomma Haejangguk.

Aewol Eomma Haejangguk is the restaurant's signature dish, built on a richly simmered bone broth (sagol yuksu) with brisket, shank, and tripe all thrown in.

If you like naejangtang but also want brisket haejangguk, this one has everything — highly recommended.

Being bone-broth based, it's deep and rich, and

the portion is seriously huge!!!! There's so much in there, and since I prefer the solid ingredients over the broth, this was exactly my kind of soup. Bean sprouts, brisket, tripe — the ingredients just kept coming no matter how much I ate, and I ate happily through the whole bowl.

In the drawer beside the table, along with spoons, there was an apron, wet wipes, and tissues ready to prevent any potential splashing disasters, and

I even finished the glass noodles down to the last bite at Aewol Eomma, a Jeju Aewol haejangguk favorite! First off, I loved how clean the place was, and then twice more for how generous and delicious the food was — recommended as a family meal spot if you're ever around Aewol.
