Why I picked omegi-tteok as my Jeju souvenir

On my way home from Jeju, I wanted to bring back souvenirs or snacks. 🎁 I've been to Jeju countless times, but tangerine chocolate, jellies, scented candles, Jeju key rings, postcards, air fresheners 🍊 — my family never even glances at that stuff. Honestly, whatever they sell at the regular souvenir shops or inside the airport all looks the same and doesn't taste great.

Then I decided I wanted to bring omegi-tteok (a Jeju rice cake) home, and while searching I found Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방). Especially for parents or older relatives, a rice cake gift seems like the best choice. Omegi-tteok is Jeju's signature rice cake, known for its clean, chewy texture.

📍 It's just 10 minutes by car or about 15 minutes by bus from the airport, so it was perfect to buy on the day I was heading back to catch my flight.

Individually wrapped in a handle box — easy to carry

The packaging is pretty enough for a gift, and it comes with a handle strap so it's stable to carry around. I had zero trouble carrying it on the bus.

Each piece is individually wrapped, so you can eat one whenever you need to. There's also a good variety of omegi-tteok flavors.

I chose everything except barley — tangerine, soybean powder, black sesame, mixed nuts, and red bean.

How to freeze and reheat omegi-tteok

Since there are no preservatives, emulsifiers, or artificial coloring, you should freeze it right away unless you're eating it immediately — which is why I highly recommend buying it on your way back to the airport. The owner thoughtfully packed an ice pack for me.

When freezing, it's best to lay the rice cakes out flat rather than stacking them. I put 9 pieces in each zipper bag, laid them out flat, and stored them in the freezer. Then just cut them in half and microwave for 20–30 seconds. My dad said they're delicious even eaten frozen, haha.

Flavor by flavor review

The red bean wasn't too sweet — clean and nutty. Black sesame is the flavor everyone likes, apparently the most popular one. It's a sweet pumpkin dough coated in black sesame, which Suragan Tteokbang grinds and roasts in-house.

Tangerine omegi-tteok seems like it would suit kids well — the tangerine dough is coated in castella breadcrumbs, making it sweet. Soybean powder omegi-tteok has that nutty flavor everyone knows! Mixed nut omegi-tteok really lets the nuttiness come through, and I'd highly recommend it for anyone who likes a chewy bite.

20 pieces for ₩22,000 — packing quantities and pre-order pickup

Gift packing is available starting from just 5 pieces, so there's no pressure. I chose 20 pieces for ₩22,000. When I stopped by after pre-ordering, rice cakes were coming out by flavor, and a lot of other customers seemed to be ordering the same 20-piece pack as me.

Omegi-tteok is the main item, but they also sell other rice cakes like seolgi and songpyeon in small portions! I imagine locals in Jeju come here for regular rice cakes too.
