Seogwipo restaurant with pre-cut pork cutlet for kids: Jejju Donghong

Jeju has so many great restaurants, but traveling with kids means it's not always easy to make it to a sit-down meal on time. This particular day we were switching accommodations and the timing was awkward, so we packed a lunchbox to go and ate it at our next place — it was so good I have to recommend it.

What is the dining room like at Jejju Donghong Branch in Seogwipo?

Jejju Donghong Branch (제쭈 동홍점) is a takeout lunchbox and rice bowl restaurant on Donghong-jungang-ro in Seogwipo. I went in to pick up food because it's known as a great Seogwipo lunchbox spot, but the place was so clean I almost thought, "wait, should we just eat here instead?"

Lunchbox shops usually feel like takeout-only places, but Jejju Donghong Branch has a wide hall, plenty of tables, and even baby chairs ready — so it seems like plenty of families come to eat in.

Jejju Donghong Branch menu: what can a child eat?

The lunchbox set seems to be the most popular pick. For kid-friendly options there's pork cutlet, grilled salmon cream mayo rice bowl, fried tofu udon, pork bulgogi rice bowl, and beef belly rice bowl. For sushi there's salmon sushi and egg sushi, and there's plenty of fried food kids love too.

Traveling with kids, my eyes went straight to the kids' menu items first, but there were so many options that for once I actually struggled to decide, hahahaha. Packed everything up neatly and headed back to the room!

Such a solid spread! This is enough to be a whole meal or even a decent anju (drinking snack) platter — and I was extra happy it came with salmon sushi, which I love, plus shrimp sushi too.

Grilled octopus rice bowl: how spicy is it really?

With stir-fried octopus in the lunchbox, it feels a lot heartier than a set that's just sushi. My husband and I both love octopus rice bowls, so we ordered one separately as well. The portion is just right for one adult meal — plenty of octopus piled on top of the rice, filling enough for a proper meal. The sauce looked pretty red so I broke a sweat as a spice-wimp, but it turned out to be way less spicy than expected, hahaha.

Even someone like me who can't handle spicy food much could eat it without much trouble! An elementary schooler who's decent with spice could probably manage it too, so it seems fine to order for kids as well.

A rice bowl like this needs plenty of sauce, right? Mix it all up and eat it for that sauce flavor — solid, solid.

Salmon sushi and shrimp sushi — need I say more? Honestly, in our house it's my husband and our two sons, and none of them are big on sushi-style food, so on family trips we mostly end up eating meat dishes the kids like, and I've gotten used to that too. But this time I realized something for sure: I'm a seafood person!

They even thoughtfully packed soy sauce and wasabi, so I dipped away happily.

I was grateful they didn't just pack the kids' pork cutlet whole — they cut it into small pieces for us.

It made me think I should eat in the restaurant next time. The staff welcomed us really kindly too, and of course food is always best eaten hot. The store is clean and comfortable, so next time we visit Seogwipo, Jeju, I definitely want to dine in.

A takeout meal to eat at your Jeju accommodation

Living up to its reputation as a great Seogwipo lunchbox spot, Jejju Donghong Branch's spread was more varied and generous than expected — great as a full meal, and with so many items packed in, it wouldn't be out of place as anju either.

If you're on a Jeju trip and want something simple but with a variety of dishes to try, or need food that's easy to eat back at your lodging, or want a lunchbox to enjoy while looking out at the Jeju sea on a nice day, Jejju Donghong Branch — a great Seogwipo lunchbox spot — is worth a try.
