Hyeopjae Korean restaurant serving mixed hairtail and mackerel stew

In short

Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch is a fish stew restaurant right in front of Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju. The writer ordered the Jeju Manong Mixed Jorim for two, tasting both hairtail and mackerel in a garlicky, aged sauce with sweet braised radish, seaweed, and rice. Anyone who prefers clean, rice-craving seasoning over a spicy-salty stew will be very satisfied here.

Hello, I'm Hyegom, happiest when I'm eating 🐻🐾

When you travel to Jeju, you have to eat black pork, you have to eat raw fish, but for me a fish stew is always non-negotiable. After visiting Hyeopjae Beach, I stopped by 'Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch' and had a really delicious, great-value fish stew.

Above all, it's right in front of the beach so it's super accessible, and they have a menu where you can eat hairtail and mackerel at the same time, so I didn't even have to think twice about visiting. Let me introduce it right now.

The sauce alone will make you eat a whole bowl of rice! A Hyeopjae hairtail stew spot loaded with garlic — 'Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch'

'Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch' is located right in front of Hyeopjae Beach, so it's extremely easy to get to. There's parking for about three or four cars in front of the restaurant, and the parking lot at Hyeopjae Beach across the street is also free to use, so it's a great spot to visit if you're driving.

Bright, pleasant interior of Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch

The atmosphere and side dishes

The atmosphere inside is bright and pleasant. Fish stew is exactly the kind of dish older family members love, so it seems like a good stop on a Jeju family trip course, and it also seemed fine to visit with kids!

Seating and walkway inside the restaurant

The restroom is inside too, which was convenient.

The side dishes come out fairly simple — bean sprout salad, stir-fried fish cake, kimchi, and seaweed.

Jeju Manong Mixed Jorim for two — hairtail and mackerel at once

Jeju Manong Mixed Jorim for two. The 'Jeju Manong Mixed Jorim' we ordered arrived. I love both mackerel and hairtail so it was hard to pick, but they sell them mixed together, which is amazing 🤍 In particular, since Onjeong Jorim is close to the Jeju Hallim Fisheries Cooperative, I heard they bring in fish from the fish market fresh every dawn. Since the Hyeopjae area is famous for Jeju silver hairtail, I liked that they pay attention to the freshness of the ingredients too!

How was the sauce?

The fish was great, but the sauce was the real deal..🥹 Rather than relying on seasoning powder, Onjeong Jorim makes its own broth with anchovies, various vegetables, and radish, then uses an aged sauce made from it — and you could really tell the depth of flavor was different. Even now while I'm writing this, I still think about that taste...🫢 If you like a fish stew that's clean rather than heavy, you'll definitely love this.

Sweet braised radish soaked in stew broth

Eat it together with the sweet braised radish on top and there's nothing that makes you eat more rice.

The fish flakes apart so softly.

A bite of seaweed with rice, fish, and sauce on top

The seaweed, rice, and fish combo

Put rice on a piece of seaweed, add plenty of sauce, then flake some fish on top — eating it all together is genuinely delicious. The seaweed isn't seasoned, so it's not salty, just clean and plain. Also, as a garlic lover — I go crazy for anything with garlic in it — the Jeju manong (garlic) had just the right amount of kick, not too spicy, just perfectly delicious!!!!? Being able to alternate between hairtail and mackerel meant I enjoyed every bite until the very end.

At the counter, they also sell mango jelly and sherbet that you can only get in Jeju. Good to know if you forgot to pick up souvenirs!

When you eat meat or raw fish the whole way through a Jeju trip, at some point you find yourself craving a warm home-style meal like this, and 'Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch' fit that day perfectly. If you like seasoning that's clean and rice-craving, like a home-cooked meal from your mom, rather than just a spicy-salty fish stew, you'll be even more satisfied! If you're looking for a Hyeopjae hairtail stew place with real flavor in the sauce, be sure to visit 'Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch.'
