Gujwa, Jeju Korean restaurant with all-you-can-refill soy crab

In short

Jongdal Sudatteul is a farmhouse-style Korean restaurant serving a 13-dish set meal in Gujwa-eup, Jeju. The Jeju hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) came with dombegogi (steamed pork slices), abalone jang, grilled hairtail, braised mackerel with aged kimchi and seafood hot pot, plus a self-serve bar where soy sauce marinated crab and bracken fern were refillable — I went back for the bracken fern twice. A receipt review event even got me a free Gujwa carrot juice, making it a generous way to taste Jeju's home cooking.

I visited Jongdal Sudatteul, a true Jeju hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) hotspot welcomed by blue skies and green lawns. It's famous as a local restaurant in Gujwa-eup for its neat yet generous farmhouse-style 13-dish spread, so I went in with high expectations.

Wide parking area in front of Jongdal Sudatteul

It's right by the road so it's easy to find, and there's plenty of parking space in front and behind the building, so you don't have to worry about that at all.

What's the atmosphere like inside?

Opening the door, instead of anything flashy, you're greeted by a warm, tidy wood-tone interior. I also spotted a long table running along the window, which would be great for a family trip or a group meal together.

After taking a seat and quickly scanning the menu, I didn't hesitate to order the signature Jeju hanjeongsik.

While the food was being prepared, I wandered around the place and noticed a wall packed with celebrity autographs. 'Ah, this is a real hotspot that's earned customers' love for a long time,' I thought, and my trust shot right up. 👍

There was also a detailed country-of-origin labeling board, so I could trust what I was eating. (And they've got Wi-Fi too, haha.)

Getting free Gujwa carrot juice with the receipt review event

And one tip you absolutely can't miss before eating! If you take part in the receipt review event, you get a refreshing Gujwa carrot juice on the house. Juice made from carrots grown specifically in 'Gujwa' — that's something you have to grab. Haha.

What's on the self-serve bar

The self-serve bar had fresh lettuce wraps and various side dishes laid out nicely. Being able to comfortably help myself to as much as I wanted was really great.

The Jeju hanjeongsik 13-dish set meal

Here's the table filled with the main dishes I ordered along with a colorful array of side dishes. It really captures the generous abundance that's characteristic of Jeju's hanjeongsik. 😆

Dombegogi (steamed pork slices)

Served neatly on a wooden board, the dombegogi had no gamey smell at all and was wonderfully savory and tender. Dipped lightly in salt, the meat's natural clean flavor really came through.

Abalone jang

The glossy abalone jang had zero fishy taste and such a chewy texture. It wasn't overly salty and had deep umami, so spooned over rice it was pure heaven.

Soy sauce marinated crab

Can't skip the fully packed soy sauce marinated crab either. The meat popped out soft and tender, and best of all, being able to freely go back for more of this delicious crab at the self-serve bar was truly moving. 😄

Grilled hairtail

Next up, the nicely browned, clean-tasting grilled hairtail. Fried fresh, it was warm, crispy on the outside and moist inside, so my chopsticks kept reaching for it. Delicious~~^^

Braised mackerel with aged kimchi

This braised mackerel with aged kimchi had a spicy sauce soaked deep into it. It's delicious wrapped in the aged kimchi with the mackerel, and mixed into rice with the soft radish, you'll polish off a whole bowl in no time.

Seafood hot pot

The seafood hot pot bubbling away in its earthenware bowl drew an instant "wow" the moment I tasted the broth. Loaded with fresh seafood, the broth was refreshingly clean and spicy.

The surprise star: bracken fern

And the quiet star that stole my taste buds that day was the bracken fern side dish. Stir-fried simply without heavy seasoning, it was clean and nutty enough to eat on its own without getting boring, and paired beautifully with the braised mackerel with aged kimchi. It was so good I went back to the self-serve bar for it twice. 👍👍

After-meal palate cleanser

After finishing the meal happily, I cleaned my palate with the refreshing Gujwa carrot juice I got from the event, plus a cup of vending machine coffee.

Jongdal Sudatteul left me with a neatly set 13-dish table and a warm feeling. I felt properly healed eating such delicious food, so if you want to taste the flavors of Jeju, I'd recommend giving it a visit.^^
