Fish cake udon solo dining in Wonju: Haengbokhan Udong Gage

In short

Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch is an udon and bunsik (Korean snack food) restaurant in Dangu-dong, Wonju, open from 11am to 4:30am the next morning with no break time. On a chilly evening the fish cake udon came with 48-hour handmade noodles — slightly thin, soft and easy on the stomach — in a dried anchovy broth piled with shredded green onion that tasted clean and refreshing. Cheese tonkatsu at 11,900 won with a bowl of rice included made Haengbokhan Udong Gage an easy pick for a late solo meal.

It's been getting chilly in the evenings lately, so I've been craving hot udon broth haha. So here's my visit to Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch.

Haengbokhan Udong Gage hours and what the storefront looks like

Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch is open from 11am to 4:30am the next day, no holidays and no break time. Since there's no break time, it's a happy udon shop you can visit whenever you like.

In the evening, I noticed some people coming in for a second round after drinks nearby.

Inside Haengbokhan Udong Gage: solo-friendly tables and 48-hour handmade noodles

This Dangu-dong, Wonju restaurant has both 2-person and 4-person tables, so you don't have to feel awkward eating alone. It seems like a lot of people were dining solo there too.

The noodles in this restaurant's udon are handmade over 48 hours, and the broth is a healthy stock brewed directly from bonito flakes and dried anchovies.

Haengbokhan Udong Gage menu and prices

Compared to today's prices, this place is genuinely good value. Basic udon is ₩8,500, and the most expensive dish on the menu is cheese tonkatsu at ₩11,900. Even cheese tonkatsu at ₩11,900 is a price I don't think you can find anywhere else these days.

They also have drinks and alcohol on the menu.

They serve pickled radish and kimchi as basic side dishes.

Fish cake udon: dried anchovy broth with plenty of green onion

The fish cake udon arrived loaded with fish cake and fried tofu, topped with dried seaweed flakes and crown daisy. I love when udon broth has shredded green onion in it, and there was plenty here, which made me happy.

And the fish cake inside the udon is delicious. Cheap fish cake usually just tastes like flour, but the fish cake here is genuinely tasty.

Even the basic size comes with a generous portion, and the handmade noodles are seriously delicious. I like udon, but usually the noodles are on the thicker side so they don't soak up the broth flavor well. But here the noodles are a bit thinner and soft, so they went down easily and my stomach felt fine afterward too.

The broth brewed from dried anchovies with shredded green onion mixed in was amazing. If it were just plain udon broth it would've tasted flat, but the green onion gives it a clean, refreshing taste haha.

The fish cake portion wasn't skimpy either — there was plenty, so you'd fill up on the udon alone.

Cheese tonkatsu for 11,900 won, best eaten without sauce

And the cheese tonkatsu was genuinely delicious. I figured a cost-effective price meant average taste, but it was really good. The flavor was outstanding for the price.

Cheese tonkatsu table setting

These days cheese tonkatsu usually costs around ₩15,000, but this Dangu-dong, Wonju restaurant serves it for ₩11,900 with soft, savory cheese, crispy tonkatsu, and rice all together in a generous serving.

The cheese wasn't greasy at all, just really savory, and it paired so well with the crispy batter that it was delicious even without dipping it in sauce.

It was better than most dedicated tonkatsu restaurants I've been to.

It's tasty with sauce too, but you can't taste the cheese as much that way, so I preferred eating it plain haha. If you're looking for a great Dangu-dong, Wonju restaurant that's both good value and full of care put into the food, how about Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch?
