Same-day booking weekday evening sushi in Ilsan: Hwangje Sushi
In short
Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch is an aged-fish sushi restaurant in the SK M City commercial building across from Ilsan Lake Park, near Jeongbalsan Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi. A same-day Naver booking secured a weekday-evening table before a CGV Ilsan screening, and the sushi set arrived with porridge, tempura and fish cake udon like a full course. Hwangje Sushi has a wait even on weekday evenings, so reserving ahead is worth it.

It had been a while since I'd caught a movie and enjoyed some good sushi, so I headed out to Ilsan. I'd won tickets to the advance screening of the film <Assassins> at CGV Ilsan, so I set off in a great mood. Before the movie started I did some frantic searching for restaurants near Ilsan Western Dome for dinner, and Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch kept coming up with excellent Naver reviews, so I decided to check it out.

Where is Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch, and where do you park?
Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch sits right across from Ilsan Lake Park near Jeongbalsan Station, so it was easy to get to and easy to find. Best of all, it's a perfect stop after a movie or a trip to the mall.
Whenever I drive, parking worries are always my first concern, but this place had solid parking facilities that made things really convenient. Being able to drive there without any hassle was a big plus.
A wait even on a weekday evening: why the same-day Naver booking matters
I visited on a weekday evening, and just in case, I made a same-day reservation through Naver on the way over. This place is apparently so well-known that even on a weekday evening the restaurant was already packed with customers, with a waiting list too!
If I hadn't booked ahead even with a same-day reservation, I probably would have had a long wait. If you're planning to visit, I highly recommend using Naver Reservations.

Inside Hwangje Sushi: atmosphere, bar counter and table seats
Walking in, I immediately felt the clean, tidy vibe of a proper Japanese restaurant. With bar-style dachi seats as well as table seats, the space looked great for solo dining or drinking, as well as dates or family gatherings.
What fish (neta) the Hwangje Sushi menu lists
Once seated, I looked over the menu and there was a really wide range of choices. Reading the descriptions, I immediately understood why this place is known as an Ilsan sushi destination — they say they only use carefully selected top-grade ingredients like Wando-farmed olive flounder, premium salmon from clean Norwegian waters, and farmed bluefin tuna over 250kg.
On top of that, they also had sea bass, Spanish mackerel, herring, horse mackerel, uni (sea urchin), and sweet shrimp — omakase-level fish varieties you rarely see at a typical sushi place. Since the fish goes through daily low-temperature aging and is prepared to order by professional Japanese chefs, the thickness and texture of the neta (fish topping) were on another level. The cuts of fish were fresh and generously sized, making every bite satisfying.

Porridge and tempura included with the Hwangje Sushi set
We ordered the set menu so we could try a variety of sushi. Ordering the set comes with warm, savory porridge and crispy tempura included as standard, making it feel like a proper course meal.

The warm porridge served before the meal was gentle and comforting on the stomach.

How did the aged-fish sushi taste?
The balance between the right amount of rice and thick, aged neta was excellent. The moment it hit my mouth, savoriness and richness spread through my whole palate.
This wasn't just plain sushi with fish slapped on top of rice — I really felt cared for, like every single ingredient had been thought through. My mouth was happy and my heart felt well looked after through the whole meal, so my satisfaction was really high.

We wrapped up the meal cleanly with freshly fried, still-crisp tempura and fish cake udon.

Would I book Hwangje Sushi Ilsan again?
I enjoyed the preview screening and finished off the day with a great sushi dinner, so it really was a perfect day. This is a place where you can enjoy high-quality aged sushi at a reasonable price with a thoughtfully composed course, so I'm planning on visiting again the next time I'm in Ilsan.
